DeSantis ROCKED As GOP Senator Calls Out Florida's Economic Downfall
Ron DeSantis gets rocked by his own party as GOP Senator Rick Scott calls out economic consequences under DeSantis' leadership citing unemployment sinking to national low. Yasmin Kahn and Brett Erlich break it down on The Damage Report. Leave a comment with your thoughts below!

There is a battle brewing within the Florida
GOP after Senator Rick Scott indirectly called
out Governor Ron DeSantis as Scott raised alarm
bells about Florida being last in the nation
economically. So we're going to first look
at what Senator Scott had to say. He posted
[00:00:18]
this, he said, unfortunately, this morning's
jobs numbers confirm what I've been sounding
the alarm on for months and what many Florida
families are already feeling. Florida is falling
behind on jobs. We're losing tens of thousands
of jobs every month and our unemployment is
[00:00:33]
behind the national average again. Something
needs to change, there needs to be a relentless
focus on growing our economy, recruiting more
job creators and getting Florida back to work.
All right, so Ron DeSantis has not commented
on the jobs report as of yet. He has been
[00:00:51]
very busy though. Instead, he has been busy.
looking at all the districts in his state
and figuring out how he can gain them a little
bit to his benefit. And he's been trying to
jam through this new map and now he has to fight
it in court. And you can tell because he posted
[00:01:06]
this on, I think on X, he says sign sealed
and delivered and there's a picture of his
new big beautiful map. And that's what we're
dealing with across this entire country. It's
so exhausting, so. Despite DeSantis' seeming
disinterest in this topic, it does sound important
[00:01:24]
to me and probably to you. So let's dive into
the details of what Rick Scott was even talking
about. So while unemployment is up across the
country versus the same time last year, Florida
is the only state to see an increase from December
to January, ticking up by another 0.2%. to
[00:01:43]
4.5 % unemployment again, and gains were made
in a few areas, but the majority of prominent
industry sectors saw losses with the hardest
hit being financial services, construction,
and hospitality. Overall, Florida's unemployment
rate is up by a total of 1 % versus last year,
[00:02:01]
and it has seen its jobless rate increase in
five consecutive reports growing from 3.7 %
in July to its current figure. And also Florida's
jobless numbers are notably impacted by the
closure of Spirit Airlines, so sad, which erased
04,800 positions from the state. While Spirit
[00:02:23]
has struggled to avoid shuddering for years,
the rising jet fuel costs driven by Trump's
war on Iran proved to be the final nail in the
coffin. That's fun, leaving the company with
no remaining way out of bankruptcy. It's just
like the irony that this Trump war is what
[00:02:39]
finally did Spirit Airlines in. I don't know,
it's really hard to mourn Spirit Airlines because
it really was just like a terrible airline.
But the reality is when these things go down,
jobs are impacted, right? People lose their
livelihoods because even a struggling airline
[00:02:54]
is still paying their existing workers something
to be there. This is, I fear this is going
to be something that we're we just get more
used to. And we're gonna be talking about it
later on the show in a different story. But
Brett, this is like these numbers, this reporting,
[00:03:12]
it's all kind of all over the place because
they don't have good people doing reporting
anymore. But what are your thoughts on this?
Yeah, there's a lot of different aspects of
this. So I would say that what's great about
being a senator is you can throw shade at
the governor because you don't really have any
You're one one hundredth of the voting populace
[00:03:33]
of the Senate. uh And you're one of two senators
from that state. So you're not directly responsible
for a lot of stuff that ends up getting back
to your state. uh Yes, you can do carve outs
and stuff. So you really the only thing you're
doing is announcing your direct responsibility
[00:03:51]
for like getting concessions from federal
budgets to open stuff in your state. And you
can yell at the governor all you want, you can
throw him shade cuz he's the one who's gonna
get the flack when this state isn't doing well.
And DeSantis, they're both rizzless limp wieners.
[00:04:07]
Like one of them Rick Scott looks like the
bat boy on the cover of Weekly World News.
And he's responsible for essentially, or his
company's responsible for the biggest medic
like proven settled Medicare fraud case in
history. um And DeSantis tried to run for president
[00:04:23]
and just like ended up not having it. So um
I like watching, I'm from California through
and through and so we're just generally better
than Florida. It's not as hot. um We have actual
waves in the water. You don't have these giant
red algae things because it's basically like
[00:04:43]
orca pee that makes the water so hot, I don't
know. But yeah, I'm not a big huge fan of
Florida, God bless them. But I love to see
these two fight and I'm here for it. I think
it's hilarious. Yeah, that was a lot of hate
for Florida, but I'm not also gonna defend
[00:05:01]
Florida, not in defense of like California is
obviously better than Florida. It's just better.
But the water is not as cold in Florida, like
the Atlantic and the Gulf. Yeah, I understand
that. And listen, I will complain about it here
a lot, but we do have genuinely better weather.
[00:05:19]
My wife's from Florida, every time she's like,
wanna go back, she steps outside and she's
like, that's right, it's too hot here. I do
like a thunderstorm when the heat breaks, but
good God, I do not wanna earn it with sitting
in what feels like 700 degree water air. Yeah,
[00:05:37]
and this is a tangent, but my cousin's getting
married in Florida this year in August. And
I'm like, God, I live in Texas, it's already
hot here, I get it. But you're gonna make me
go to Florida in August? I don't. Like move
your wedding, like when I got married in Texas,
[00:05:55]
I put it in November so that my Canadian cousins
wouldn't melt once they got here. But like
make us all go to Florida, that's fine, in August.
