Trump Promises 'Ideological Screening For All Immigrants' In Campaign Speech
Former President Donald Trump used a trick from the 2016 playbook by appealing to right-wing Americans' fear of immigrants.
- 9 minutes
We do the rallies, like, once a month,
there's a man, Viktor Orban.
Did anyone ever hear of him?
He's probably one of the strongest
leaders anywhere in the world.
He's the leader of Turkey fronts on
both Russia, you gotta get out there and
[00:00:16]
you gotta watch those voters.
You don't have to vote,
don't worry about voting.
The voting we got plenty of votes.
You know, you spell us, right?
You spell as, U.S.
[MUSIC]
I just picked that up.
Has anyone ever thought of that?
I just picked that up.
[00:00:33]
>> Speaker 2: I gotta say, it looks like
the DeSantis war room has improved with
their editing and video skills,
because that hit on Donald Trump's
speech in Derry, New Hampshire.,
from yesterday is just fantastic.
But,, we should dissect more of
the things that Trump promised and
[00:00:50]
claimed during that very rally speech.
So let's start with his
recent takes on immigration.
>> Speaker 1: A vote for
Crooked Joe is a vote to turn the United
States into a hotbed of Jihadists and
make our cities into dumping grounds
very much resembling the Gaza Strip.
[00:01:09]
Have you been to the Gaza Strip?
A vote for President Trump is
a vote to secure the border, and
it's a vote to keep radical Islamic
terrorists the hell out of our country.
>> [APPLAUSE].
>> On day one, I will immediately
restore and expand the Trump travel ban.
[00:01:28]
Remember when they said, that's so
vicious, but it kept us safe, and
it passed in the Supreme Court
of the United States.
They sued me in every different
court you wouldn't believe it, but
on entry from terror plague countries and
halt all of the refugee settlements to
the United States, they wanna come in,
[00:01:46]
they wanna bring the same people
that are shooting rockets at Israel.
They wanna come into the United States.
I don't think a lot of good
things are gonna happen.
>> Speaker 2: So, there are two things
that I wanna talk about here, okay?
[00:02:02]
And I want everyone to
understand the distinction,
so they don't think I'm rooting for
what Trump is saying here,
because I find what he's
saying pretty gross.
But there is the political
component of it, and
then there's the moral component of it.
Morally, I find what he's saying
despicable, untrue and disgusting, okay?
[00:02:21]
The idea that we should support
the Israeli government in doing what it
is currently doing in Gaza,
which is overwhelmingly killing innocent
Palestinian civilians, and then turn
around and say, the innocent Palestinian
civilians who survive should not be
allowed into our country, it disgusts me.
[00:02:40]
Let's just put it that way.
Now then there's the political component
of it, and politically speaking,
as many big cities across the country are
dealing with the migrant crisis with very
little resources allocated to
them from the federal government,
that was politically savvy, unfortunately.
[00:02:56]
What do you think, Cenk?
>> Speaker 3: I was gonna
say the same exact thing.
So, that is a very populist speech that,
unfortunately,
I think is going to work, but
that is the ugly side of populism.
And so as people are concerned about
crime, immigration, Hamas, this war, and
[00:03:12]
they see these brutal stories coming out
of Israel, it's a very easy thing to do to
take up that fear and anger and hatred and
use it for your own political purposes.
And Trump is the king of,
he senses the dark side,
and he draws it out and amplifies it.
[00:03:30]
So, I'm worried that it's gonna work.
Okay, now having said that,
let's now talk about how ugly it is.
So first there's the lies.
They're coming here.
Who's they?
Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
What are you talking about?
There's not one piece of evidence that
anybody from Hamas or Islamic Jihad is
[00:03:48]
applying to come here or has come here
that there's a terrorist attack here.
The only terrorist attacks that have
happened recently are your fans.
Let's be honest,
that's just factual, right?
The pipe bombs, the threats of killings,
the killings, etcetera.
Almost all of the domestic
terrorism now is right wing.
[00:04:06]
But by the way,
we point that out, but we don't go then
tell you, we gotta ban the right wing.
We should arrest all the right wing.
We don't say that cuz we're not Trump.
We don't do the ugly side of populism.
If it was him,
he would do that to us in a second.
And in fact, he's doing it in
a case where it doesn't even exist.
[00:04:23]
So that's the lies and then the hate.
We gotta ban them.
And what is he saying?
He's saying look,
he's referring to his travel ban.
Now, I know right wingers go
pretended it wasn't a Muslim ban.
He said it was a Muslim
ban when he was running.
[00:04:41]
Then he said he wanted to do the Muslim
ban, and then he realized legally,
he's not allowed to ban a religion, right?
So he changed it to, well, okay,
we'll add a couple of countries
that aren't perfectly Muslim, and
you loved it because it was a Muslim ban,
and then you pretended that it wasn't.
[00:04:57]
But is that what he's referring to
after what happened with Hamas?
Obviously, he's referring
to the Muslim ban.
>> Speaker 2: Well, Cenk, that's a perfect
segue into the second part of what he had
to say about immigration,
cuz religion comes up.
Let's watch.
[00:05:13]
>> Speaker 1: And I will implement strong
ideological screening of all immigrants.
If you hate America, if you want to
abolish Israel, if you don't like our
religion, which a lot of them don't,
if you sympathize with Jihadists,
then we don't want you in our country,
and you are not getting in, right?
[00:05:32]
>> [APPLAUSE]
>> Speaker 1: We don't want you.
Get out of here, you're fired.
>> Speaker 2: Nice, so
ideological tests, okay,
are they gonna get waterboarded as you're
interrogating them about their ideology?
[00:05:51]
And what exactly is our religion?
>> Speaker 3: Okay, guys, look,
I'm mainly talking to independence here,
cuz right wing on these issues,
I'm sorry, is hopeless.
So, if you said an ideological test in
the reverse, if Biden had given that exact
same speech and said, I just wanna
ideological test from now on, and
[00:06:09]
any immigrant that comes
in has to be a Democrat.
And we're doing an ideological test, we
want them to be liberals, we want to be in
favor of Muslims, we want them to be
in favor of this and this and this.
You would all be like
your heads would explode,
MAGA heads with everyone about, all right?
[00:06:26]
When he says the exact opposite,
you're like, yes, ideological test.
Screw America, and it's freedom,
I don't believe in freedom of thought or
opinion or speech.
I wanna everybody to think just like me.
Okay, just admit it.
If you didn't like the speech,
then God bless.
[00:06:41]
This isn't about you, and you're
equally outraged as an American, right?
If you like the speech,
admit who you are, you're un-American.
In the Constitution it says,
we shall not establish a religion.
He says they don't like our religion.
Which religion?
If you're Jewish in America, does that
give you comfort that now Trump is
[00:06:57]
declaring basically that
Christianity is our religion and
that if you don't like it, then maybe
we'll kick you out of the country?
That is the antithesis of America.
That's the antithesis of our Constitution,
and that does not give any comfort to
anyone who is Jewish or
any other religion, right?
[00:07:14]
So he's not in favor of Israel,
he's not in favor of Jewish people,
he's not in favor of anything.
All he's in favor of is demagoguing and
hatred, he's hatred personified.
So, look, this is the question I asked,
it's unanswerable for, MAGA.
So he wants to ban people like me who
don't agree with him ideologically,
[00:07:32]
who are not from the religion
that he is from.
So am I supposed to just sit here and
go, yeah, then I'll vote for him?
Why would anybody vote for
someone who says, I hate you and
I don't want you to be
a part of this country?
What a weird, unreasonable ass.
[00:07:48]
And you still don't get that he's racist.
You're like, yeah, just so please,
if you're MAGA, just admit it.
You don't like certain races and
religions,
that is the definition of a bigot,
the definition.
But if you didn't like the speech,
then we're all on the same page.
[00:08:04]
That is the most un-American
speech I've ever heard, and
he's never read the Constitution.
And remember, when the Constitution was
inconvenient to him in the election he
said, we should suspend the Constitution.
He doesn't believe in
the Constitution at all,
he doesn't believe in America at all,
he doesn't believe in democracy at all.
[00:08:23]
A pure bona fide fascist running for
president and currently winning.
>> Speaker 2: Let's talk about how many
Palestinian refugees the United States
allows into the country.
So in fiscal year 2023, for example,
the United States welcomed just
56 Palestinian refugees, or
[00:08:42]
0.9% of the 60,014 refugees
resettled during the time period,
according to State Department data.
In fiscal year 2022,
that number was a whopping 16.
Over the past 10 years,
fewer than 600 Palestinians have arrived
[00:09:01]
in the United States under the refugee
program, the statistics show.
>> Speaker 3: I gotta say
something about that.
He keeps saying they, like they're
all Palestinians are the same,
all Muslims are the same, etcetera.
No, the people who get refugee status
here, oftentimes help the U.S. government.
That is why we're giving them that status.
[00:09:18]
For example, when Afghans come here,
they were our translators in Afghanistan.
A lot of times,
those Afghans saved American lives, but
he doesn't care cuz he's a demagogue and
a piece of crap.
So he goes, yeah, that's Muslims,
they're all the same, let's ban them.
[00:09:33]
Even though they saved American lives.
You like that guy,
there's something wrong with you.
You either don't know enough information,
which is true of a lot of his supporters,
but if you know that stuff and
you still like him,
you're just raising your hand and
saying, I'm a terrible person.
[00:09:49]
And I like that he's a terrible person,
and that's why I'm voting for him.
