Over the past few years we’ve seen debates among the left about cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation. A recent controversial comment from Italian-American singer Gwen Stefani has brought that debate back to the forefront. Stefani, who launched a Japanese-inspired fragrance brand called Harajuku Lovers in 2008, said that when she visited Japan as an adult she thought to herself, “My God, I’m Japanese and I didn’t know it.”
