Halloween Is Under Attack By MORE Than Just Right-Wingers
"Halloween is a dark, dark day," says conservative Charlie Kirk, but he's not the only one who believes that.
- 7 minutes
Halloween is coming up,
which is All Saints Day.
But let's just be honest,
Halloween is a dark, dark day.
Not a fan of it, it's what you do with it.
Not a fan of all the kind of dressing up
and all that nonsense, I don't like it.
>> Speaker 2: Halloween is a dark,
dark day, says Charlie Kirk.
[00:00:18]
>> [LAUGH]
>> But you'd be surprised,
because while a right winger,
along with, I mean,
decades of other right wingers is
fear mongering about Halloween,
looks like some on the left are joining
him, but from a completely different
angle, a diversity, equity, and
inclusion angle, I'm not kidding.
[00:00:37]
>> Jesus.
>> Now, school districts in states like
New Jersey have decided to
ban Halloween festivities in
the classroom in the name of diversity and
inclusion.
Now, district officials from South Orange
Maplewood schools sent out a letter to
[00:00:53]
parents this month, and
here's what they said.
As you know, the South Orange and
Maplewood School District is committed to
promoting diversity, equity,
and inclusion meaningfully.
Not just saying the words, but also
promoting an inclusive school community
[00:01:08]
that celebrates belonging for
all students, families, and staff.
Each year, questions arise from families,
students, and
staff about what the district schools
will be doing regarding Halloween.
We believe it is important, moving
forward, that we implement a consistent
[00:01:24]
approach that is respectful and
inclusive of all families.
In trying to determine the right
approach for our district,
we formulated three crucial questions.
Now, what are the questions?
Here we go.
Is promoting school sponsored Halloween
activities creating indirect and
[00:01:41]
unintentional financial hardships for
students and families?
>> Speaker 3: Come on, brother.
>> Speaker 2: Do school sponsored
Halloween activities violate the dignity
of some of our students and families,
either culturally or religiously?
And finally, does the promotion of
school sponsored Halloween activities
[00:01:59]
create tensions with the equity and
access values of the school district?
>> Speaker 3: Now,
I don't even know what you're saying.
What is that?
That last one,
I don't even know what that is.
I don't think they know what that is,
okay?
>> Speaker 2: They've banned the Halloween
festivities in the classroom.
>> Speaker 3: Of course they have.
[00:02:14]
>> Speaker 2: Okay, maybe after school
hours, Halloween festivities could
take place, but during school hours,
no, can't have it happen.
We're worried that some
students might not like it or
it might not be inclusive
of some students.
[00:02:32]
Listen, when I was in elementary school,
my dad lost his job and
we were in a very terrible
financial situation, okay?
I remember it as if it happened yesterday.
We had no money, we were broke,
and I wore a Halloween
[00:02:48]
costume that was donated to me,
if I remember it correctly.
So here it is, I was very cute.
It's gonna be okay, if you're
worried about look at how cute I am.
>> [LAUGH]
>> I was a little kitty.
You were a little bodysuit,
little cat ears.
[00:03:05]
Okay, don't take this away from the kids.
They think they're helping,
they're not helping.
Halloween when I was a kid
was freaking awesome.
I remember, the festivities we had
at school, I was super excited,
I had the best time.
By the way, as an adult, I actually don't
really care for Halloween that much.
[00:03:21]
>> Speaker 3: Boo.
>> Speaker 2: However,
I remember loving it as a kid,
taking that away from them is awful.
If you're worried about students
not having the means for
costumes, do a costume drive, right?
Don't do away with the holiday and
the festivities because of it,
[00:03:38]
find creative solutions
to the issues that arise.
>> Speaker 3: Yeah, so I'll tell you
my version of that story as well.
But first, look, the reason Charlie Kirk's
against Halloween is because,
and we've covered this a lot in the 21
years young Turk has been around.
Christian evangelicals think that the
Harry Potter competes with Jesus Christ,
[00:03:58]
and they think, like, witches and
demons and warlocks are real.
So they're like, no,
those are the bad guys.
And so Christian Kirk has to appease that
audience by saying, it's a very dark day,
all those demons flying out.
And Harry Potter, I mean,
what does he think he is.
[00:04:13]
Potter of Nazareth?
No, okay?
But now the extreme left has met
the extreme right, and
the extreme left says,
it would be culturally
religiously insensitive.
So now, wait,
is the left supposed to agree with
evangelical fundamentalist Christians who
[00:04:33]
think that it is religiously insensitive
to dress as Satan, for example?
Guys, come on, what is this?
What is this?
>> Speaker 2: Have fun, please.
Can we just bring a little
bit of the fun back in life?
>> Speaker 3: But
that's gonna go to one of my points here.
So first of all,
you say in diversity and inclusion,
[00:04:51]
we're gonna make sure there are no diverse
costumes and everyone is excluded.
How is that diversity and
how is it inclusive?
It's the exact opposite, right?
But most importantly, when you shut
down the holiday, everyone hates you.
[00:05:08]
We've been making fun
of the right wing for
20 years straight about their hatred for
Halloween.
You know who loves Halloween?
America and every kid in America.
If you're against Halloween,
you're against America.
What is wrong with you?
[00:05:23]
Okay, why don't you just come
out against Thanksgiving, right,
they do that sometimes, too.
And against have well,
they do that sometimes, too.
Hey, guys, let us celebrate,
let us have fun.
And so, okay, poor people are having
trouble with costumes, yeah,
a lot of us were poor.
And you know what happened?
[00:05:38]
So I had trouble with a costume,
just like Ana did when I was growing up.
And my neighbor, who was the loveliest
person you'll ever meet in your life,
she made me a whole outfit, okay?
It was a prisoner outfit,
it was black and white with the stripes,
had a ball and chains.
I came in second in the whole
school in the outfit costume, okay,
[00:05:57]
because sometimes people
open up their hearts.
>> Speaker 2: Yes.
>> Speaker 3: And my beautiful, lovely,
great American neighbor came to my
rescue and we built a bond together.
That's how things work, okay?
And later, when I was playing football,
I would go in my football outfit,
[00:06:15]
and I would collect the candy
in my helmet, [LAUGH] okay?
Little too old, but still you get
the point, we love Halloween.
This is not the New Jersey I grew up
in and the New Jersey I know and love.
So we've got to get back to reality and
back to sanity.
[00:06:32]
So the extreme left and right could go
exclude everyone in their own time,
maybe they should go on an island
somewhere on Halloween.
Have their own Halloween party
where they hate each other.
>> Speaker 2: The Debbie Downer Island.
>> Speaker 2: Yeah.
>> Speaker 2: Go enjoy, go nuts.
Go to the Debbie, where you guys
just complain about everything.
[00:06:49]
Don't look at the bright side of anything,
constantly complain,
go enjoy each other's company or
fight each other.
I don't care, but
go do it in the island and leave us alone.
Let the kids enjoy Halloween, come on.
Come on, and I'm not even a proponent of
Halloween, but I don't wanna ruin it for
everyone else because I'm an American.
[00:07:06]
>> Speaker 3: Exactly, now, look,
Halloween's thing is trick or treat.
And now both extreme right and
extreme left are saying shrink.
No, it's supposed to be treat,
you're supposed to give candy to the kids,
[00:07:21]
not be like,
I will now judge you for you and
your costume and your fun holidays and
your candy, right?
I will exclude all of you
in the name of inclusion.
No, no, get back to sanity and
get back to Halloween and back to America.
[00:07:36]
>> Speaker 3: America.
