The GOP Plan

If Republicans Win...

A running tally of Republican legislative and policy goals if they retake Congress

Congressional Republicans have not released a single, unifying document outlining all their legislative goals if they retake control of Congress in 2023. However, some party leaders have revealed their positions on a number of issues.

Many of these issues have been overlooked in recent political reporting, which tends to focus more on polling. So, TYT Reports is maintaining a running tally of relevant reports of the goals articulated by GOP party leaders. House Min. Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is likely to serve as House speaker if Republicans win a majority in the chamber. Sen. Min. Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is likely to be elected majority leader if his party controls the Senate.

This list will be updated up through the 2022 midterm elections.

Raise Taxes on the Poor

Sen. Min. Leader Mitch McConnell denies they'll do it, but his leadership rival, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) released a plan to make everyone -- no matter how poor -- pay taxes, even if that means raising tax rates for people who can't even feed their kids. TYT found 2010 video of Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) pushing the exact same thing, along with a blizzard of other radically unpopular policies.

Kill Homeowner Rebates

Natural gas lobbyists are preparing to work with Republicans to kill Biden administration rebates to help low- and middle-income households afford to switch from natural-gas appliances to cheaper, safer, electric ones.

Weaken Bank Watchdog

The GOP wants to take control of, and cut, funding for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which guards against predatory behavior against consumers by banks and payday lenders; a recent court ruling is a step in that direction.

Abandon Ukraine

McCarthy suggested Republicans will not "write a blank check" to keep supplying Ukraine with military materiel and intelligence. (h/t)

Let Drug Companies Raise Prices

Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Mike Lee (R-UT) are backing a bill that would kill Democratic caps on some drug prices.

Let Energy Companies Steamroll Neighborhoods

Sen. Shelley Moore Capito’s (R-WV) START Act could pollute local communities and advance the climate crisis by limiting the time for community input on potentially harmful energy projects, guaranteeing the Mountain Valley Pipeline's completion, and getting rid of some Clean Air Act mandates.

  • 65% of voters want lawmakers to listen to communities of fossil fuel companies when it comes to negotiating permitting reform.

"Commitment to America"

McCarthy released a vague agenda promising improvements on every metric without explaining how many of them would be achieved. The few specifics included: Increasing fossil fuel mining and drilling on U.S. land and in U.S. waters, Making it easier for fossil fuel companies to build facilities over community opposition, Undermining public education by funneling (more) tax dollars to religious and for-profit schools, Discriminating against transgender student athletes, Protecting the unborn, Protecting the right to faith-based discrimination, Protecting the Second Amendment, Restricting the right to vote through requirements and intimidation.
