Trump clearly doesn’t care about kids, teachers, schools, or people in general. John Iadarola and Jayar Jackson break it down on The Damage Report. It will go away like things go away. And my view is that school should be open.” Coronavirus case counts in the U.S. have been averaging approximately 60,000 per day in recent weeks — a total which does not support the president’s claim that the virus is disappearing." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Trump doesn’t understand why America can’t entirely reopen schools. John Iadarola and Jayar Jackson break it down on The Damage Report. The coronavirus pandemic is again rearing out of control, rising in a majority of states as a new warning comes that more than 200,000 Americans could be dead by Election Day. The United States on Tuesday recorded 60,021 new cases of the virus, a new single day record. But Trump barreled forward anyway, failing to offer detailed proposals or planning on the imminent question of how schools could open safely as soon as next month even as he admitted he intended to crank up pressure on governors to do what he wants. "I would say that when we talk about the fall, that seems like a long time. It's a long time," Trump said in an interview Tuesday with Nexstar Media Group. Trump on Wednesday tried to point to some other countries' ability to open their schools as evidence the US must do the same, but he is neglecting the fact that they all wrangled the pandemic through public health measures he's not pushing." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Student debt forgiveness could create an economic boom. John Iadarola and Jose Caballero break it down on The Damage Report. Since at least the Great Recession a decade ago, borrowers, activists and others have been building a case that erasing debt acquired during students college years is a matter of economic justice. More recently, researchers have found that canceling some or all of the nation’s outstanding student debt has the potential to boost gross domestic product, narrow the widening racial wealth gap and liberate millions of Americans from a financial albatross that previous generations never had to contend with. Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, both vying for the Democratic nomination for president, are proposing to wipe away some or all of the country’s burdensome debt as a key part of their campaigns. They plan to pay for it — and accompanying proposals to make public college tuition-free — by raising taxes on the wealthy. Warren estimates her plan would cost $1.25 trillion over 10 years, and Sanders says his would cost $2.2 trillion." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced Friday he will visit three historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) during a multiday tour in North and South Carolina as he seeks to chip into former Vice President Joe Biden’s lead among African American voters. The tour includes stops at North Carolina A&T State University, Benedict College and South Carolina State University, the three HBCUs, as well as University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Winthrop University. The campaign said in a press release that the trip is intended to “engage students on issues that matter to them, including Senator Sanders’ plan to cancel all student loan debt and make public colleges and universities tuition-free.” Sanders will be joined on the tour by campaign co-chairs Nina Turner and Ben Cohen — the co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s — as well as other surrogates for his campaign including rapper Killer Mike, activist Phillip Agnew, actor Danny Glover and professors Cornel West and Adolph Reed. The tour comes as Sanders and other Democratic contenders seek to win over African American voters who have largely backed Biden in polls.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The total reached $1.5 trillion in the first quarter of the year spread across roughly 20% of the population. Of the total, 11.4% of the aggregate debt is either 90 plus days in arrears or in default. Reportedly, only 54% of those with student loans make consistent payments. It's a disaster in the making, with many barely treading water. So, yes, student loan forgiveness is a hot issue—the real underlying cause being the cost of college, but fixing that doesn't change the spot many are in—and presidential candidates are addressing it. Some want major loan forgiveness. Kamala Harris got some attention over the weekend for a student loan forgiveness program she suggested, involving entrepreneurship in disadvantaged communities. But there are many problems with it that undermine the entire concept." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Bernie Sanders’s proposal to make college free in the United States just got bigger: He wants to erase all student debt too. All $1.6 trillion of it. "The Vermont senator will unveil the most ambitious higher education plan in the Democratic 2020 presidential primary so far on Monday. The proposal would make two- and four-year public and tribal colleges and universities tuition-free and debt-free, and erase the roughly $1.6 trillion in student loan debt currently owed in the US, paid for by a tax on Wall Street. Currently, about 45 million Americans have student loans. This would cancel debt for all of them — regardless of their income or assets. That’s a notable difference from Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s free college proposal, which also provides broad debt relief but caps it for households with incomes over $250,000. Sanders is proposing funding streams to states, tribes, and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to allow them to eliminate undergraduate tuition and fees. The bill would also increase spending on work-study programs and build up federal grant programs for low-income students for additional costs related to getting an education, from housing and transportation to buying books." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Student organizers had planned to end their days-long sit-in on Wednesday, while demanding a meeting with House Speaker Robert DeLeo to push for legislation to increase state aid to public colleges and to make public college debt free for Massachusetts residents. Members of the group met briefly with state Senate President Karen Spilka Monday. "The [state] funding levels have decreased and the burden of paying for education has fallen on students," said rising UMass Amherst sophomore Emma Kinney, who expects to have $50,000 worth of loans when she graduates. "We've said it a million times and they don't do anything, and so if we need to sit in, then we will. And if we need to come back and do it again, then we will." Kinney said she works 35 hours a week, in addition to being a full-time student, in order to make ends meet." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Morehouse is an all-male, historically black college in Atlanta. There’s near-universal bipartisan agreement that reform is desperately needed, but almost as much disagreement about what, exactly, to do about it. On Monday, Senator Elizabeth Warren, one of the Democratic hopefuls vying for the White House in 2020, released a comprehensive college-affordability plan that she believes could fix a fundamentally flawed system of paying for college. In a Medium post, Warren criticized the government’s hands-off approach as affordable access to America’s universities declined. “Rather than stepping in to hold states accountable, or to pick up more of the tab and keep costs reasonable, the federal government went with a third option: pushing families that can’t afford to pay the outrageous costs of higher education towards taking out loans,” she wrote in the post. To remedy this, she is calling for a series of ambitious proposals, including the cancellation of student debt, universal free public college, and greater support for minority and low-income students. Of course, Warren is not the first politician to call for any of these policies specifically, but the details of her plan separate her reform package from the pack; she plans to pay for it with her “ultra-millionaire tax”—an annual 2 percent tax on families with $50 million or more in wealth. Critics of a wealth tax argue that it would be difficult to implement—accounting for assets such as antiques or land poses considerable difficulties—and that it would lead to more aggressive tax avoidance." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TYTNetwork

In 1838, Georgetown Jesuits sold 272 people who worked on plantations in Maryland. Slavery was abolished in the US in 1865, after the civil war. Debate over whether descendants of enslaved people should receive reparations is longstanding. The idea has been discussed on a national stage this year, among candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination. Results released on Friday showed two-thirds of Georgetown undergraduates who voted in a non-binding referendum said payments should be funded in their case by a fee that would apply to all undergraduate students. Richard Cellini, founder of the Georgetown Memory Project, which has raised money to identify thousands of descendants of the people sold in 1838, told the Guardian the vote was “momentous”. “It makes me very proud of the students,” he said. “My guess is that the university will do what it’s always done, which is soft-talk and slow-walk this, but I hope I’m wrong.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TYTNetwork
