Perhaps predictably, the same Republican legislators who consistently stoked the “Stop the Steal” fire that led to last week’s assault on the Capitol are now calling for “unity” and to tamp down the heated rhetoric - you know, the rhetoric they themselves encouraged? Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is not feeling in a particularly conciliatory mood, however, recently describing the Capitol attack as an “insurrection against the United States” and insisting that “healing” cannot happen without accountability. If a foreign head of state had directed an attack on the US Congress, she pointed out, no one would be saying there should be no consequences and we all need to move on.

In this clip from The Damage Report, John and Francesca address AOC’s remarks, with John shuddering to imagine what would have happened if the MAGA mob had managed to capture the New York City Congresswoman. Francesca, for her part, agrees with AOC that without accountability similar acts of violence will recur, so it’s time to get out the “shock collars” and “spray bottles” to “house train” the Republicans responsible so that they will learn their lesson.

“If there are not consequences for white supremacists, for racists - if we do not defend specifically black and brown communities and lift up their voting rights and their civil rights, then we're going to be facing this over and over and over again,” she says.
