After it was announced that Elon Musk struck a deal to buy Twitter, the social media site was flooded with reports of high-profile users losing, or in some cases gaining, thousands of followers at an irregular rate. Twitter alleges that the fluctuations in follow count are due to organic new account activation and deactivation, even though they didn't release any data about the activity.
