On Sunday, The New York Times reported former national security adviser John Bolton wrote in a manuscript of his upcoming book that Mr. Trump explicitly refused to release nearly $400 million in military aid to Ukraine in 2019 unless the country pursued investigations into his political rivals, including the Bidens. The Times reported Bolton had submitted the manuscript to the White House for a standard prepublication review for classified information. Mr. Trump's attorneys spent much of the day sidestepping Bolton's claims until Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz began speaking around 8 p.m. Dershowitz confronted Bolton's allegations head on, arguing that even if they are true, the president's actions still don't rise to the level of an impeachable offense." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

His daughter Gianna, 13, was also on board, NBA authorities confirmed. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said nine people were on the copter — a pilot and eight passengers. He would not confirm who had died until all the next of kin have been notified, he said. The L.A. County coroner’s office said Sunday night that the recovery effort is expected to take several days because of the condition of the crash site and its remote location. Officials have shut down roads leading to the site because of a throng of visitors trying to get there. The helicopter, a Sikorsky S-76B built in 1991, departed John Wayne Airport at 9:06 a.m. Sunday, according to publicly available flight records. The chopper passed over Boyle Heights, near Dodger Stadium, and circled over Glendale during the flight. The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near Las Virgenes Road and Willow Glen Street in Calabasas. Authorities received a 911 call at 9:47 a.m., and firefighters arrived to find that the crash had ignited a quarter-acre brush fire in steep terrain, said L.A. County Fire Chief Daryl Osby. Responders included 56 fire personnel — firefighters, a helicopter with paramedics, hand crews — and sheriff’s deputies. “Our firefighters hiked into the accident site with their medical equipment and hose lines to extinguish the stubborn fire as it included the brush fire … and the helicopter,” Osby said during a news conference Sunday afternoon. “The fire also included magnesium, which is very hard for firefighters to extinguish because magnesium reacts with oxygen and water.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The "Fallin'" singer and Grammy host belted out a song at the 62nd annual music ceremony on Sunday in Los Angeles, saying, "Tonight we must unite in spite of all the news that we're seeing.” After name-checking singers Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande, among others, Keys then touched on politics, singing: "Commander in chief impeached/Ya'll get out/Let's bring Cardi B." "Cardi, can you please show these people what to do?" Keys asked. Cardi B, an outspoken Trump critic, has flirted with a political bid before. The "Bodak Yellow" rapper, who was born Belcalis Almánzar, tweeted earlier this month: "I do feel like if I go back to school and focus up I can be part of Congress.I deadass have sooo much ideas that make sense.I just need a couple of years of school and I can shake the table." In her Grammys tune on Sunday, Keys sang to loud applause from the audience: "It's just too many lies/Too much hate, too much spin/It's when good people do nothing, that the bad guys win.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Doug Jones (D-Ala.) on Sunday floated subpoenaing former national security adviser John Bolton's forthcoming memoir if the former official isn't called to testify himself. "The Senate needs to hear from Bolton. The American people deserve to hear from Bolton. If we can’t get Bolton let’s get a subpoena for the book!" Jones tweeted. Jones hasn't said if he will vote to convict or acquit President Trump at the end of the trial, but has thrown his support behind the call for more witnesses and documents. His suggestion comes after The New York Times, citing sources familiar with Bolton's writing, reported that Bolton claims in his book that Trump sought to tie up $391 million in aid to Ukraine to his requests for the country's leaders to help with investigations into Democrats, including former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. The report comes as the Senate is expected to vote this week on whether or not to allow calling new witnesses or documents. Democrats immediately seized on the Times report to double down on their demand that Bolton testify." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A cascade of polls released over the weekend have Bernie Sanders challenging Joe Biden’s frontrunner status, surpassing Biden in key early states as the national horse race tightens up. In total, seven polls were released this weekend, painting a picture of a Democratic primary that has no clear leader. A group of surveys out of the first two states to head to the polls — Iowa and New Hampshire — have Sanders in a strong position. But other candidates remain within striking distance, highlighting the fluidity of the race with eight days to go until the Iowa caucuses. In a poll conducted in Iowa by The New York Times/Siena College that was released Saturday, the Vermont senator sat at the top of the pack at 25 percent. Three other candidates were battling for second place — Pete Buttigieg, Biden and Elizabeth Warren — all within three points of one another. Buttigieg was at 18 percent, to Biden’s 17 percent and Warren’s 15 percent. A second Iowa poll, conducted by CBS News/YouGov, has the race closer at the top, with three candidates within three points of each other. Sanders is at 26 percent to Biden's 25 percent and Buttigieg's 22 percent. Warren was at 15 percent." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In their recorded interview from Friday, the nation's top diplomat declined to respond when Kelly asked whether he owed an apology to Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. She was ousted from that post last year after allies of President Trump accused her of disloyalty. "I agreed to come on your show today," Pompeo replied, "to talk about Iran.” Kelly pushed back, telling Pompeo, "I confirmed with your staff last night that I would talk about Iran and Ukraine." She later said she specifically flagged her intention to do so in writing, noting, "I never agree to take any topics off the table.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Two key moderates, Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), say Bolton’s claim strengthens their calls for the Senate to hear from witnesses at President Trump’s impeachment trial. Yet GOP leaders and other rank-and-file Republican senators are questioning Bolton’s motivations and dismissing the reported claims of his book draft as adding little to the case against the president. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), at a Republican conference lunch meeting Monday, urged his colleagues to hold off on making a quick judgment on the need for witnesses in the wake of news reports on Bolton’s claims. Romney told reporters Monday morning “it’s increasingly likely that other Republicans will join those of us who think we should hear from John Bolton.” Collins, another key moderate, said “reports about John Bolton’s book strengthens the case for witnesses and have prompted a number of conversations among my colleagues.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

This year was no exception. Take a look. Surprise: Billie Eilish became just the second artist in Grammy history to sweep the Big Four awards: album, record and song of the year, plus best new artist. The first was Christopher Cross 39 years ago. It was a surprise because Lizzo came on strong in recent months and it seemed likely that the two would split the top prizes. In the end, Lizzo beat Eilish in just one category—best pop solo performance for "Truth Hurts." (Fun Fact: Cross also lost in that category in the year of his sweep. Kenny Loggins' "This Is It" took best pop vocal performance, male, edging out Cross' "Sailing.") Surprise: Elvis Costello & the Imposters took the award for best traditional pop vocal album for Look Now, beating four-time category champ Michael Bublé and perennial nominee Barbra Streisand. It's Costello's first Grammy win in 20 years, since he shared a 1998 award with Burt Bacharach. Costello and the Imposters are the first group (as opposed to collabs) to win in this category." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Adam Schiff (D-CA) ended Thursday night’s arguments in the Senate trial of Donald Trump by emotionally insisting that “right matters” and “we’re lost” if the truth is simply tossed aside. “If right doesn’t matter—if right doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter how good the Constitution is. It doesn’t matter how brilliant the Framers were,” he proclaimed. “Doesn’t matter how good or bad our advocacy in this trial is. Doesn’t matter how well written the oath of impartiality is. If right doesn’t matter, we’re lost. If the truth doesn’t matter, we’re lost.” Stating that President Trump can’t be trusted to “do what’s right for the country” and that he’ll only “do what’s right for himself” because he’s done it before, Schiff then appeared to get choked up as he called on senators to convict the president. “This is why, if you find him guilty, you must find that he should be removed,” Schiff concluded. “Because right matters. Because right matters. And the truth matters. Otherwise, we are lost.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Within DSA, many members feel that our organization is “too white,” a shorthand that includes many different diagnoses of and solutions to the problem. And although DSA members of color have striven to achieve a nuanced balance between developing separate networks (such as the Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus) and involving themselves in the general work of their chapters, these efforts have not yet brought working-class people of color into the organization at the scale needed to qualitatively change the makeup of DSA. In developing a coherent approach to addressing this issue, it can help us to go back to the basics. We know that socialism will only be achieved through a mass movement of the multiracial working class. DSA’s explosive upsurge to more than 55,000 members is a promising indication of the potential of left politics in this period of economic, social, and ecological crisis. Yet our continued growth is not guaranteed, because it has been a phenomenon of the historical moment spurred by events largely external to the organization: Bernie Sanders’s campaigns, Trump’s presidency, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory. If DSA is to become a historical force in its own right, we must make the transition from a self-selected group to a truly mass organization capable of organizing all parts of the multiracial working class. The question, then, is, “How should DSA chapters work in communities with which our current membership lacks strong organic connections?” DSA cannot and should not attempt to impose a program or agenda where its members would be perceived as outsiders. Yet our goal must be to eventually grow our membership and influence in every neighborhood in the United States." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The policy had allowed them to avoid driving during potentially hazardous weather conditions, but, at that busy time, it was being called off. “Hey guys, all weather policy is dissolved throughout the entire state because we have five weeks left until the election,” Kay Glad, Biden’s regional organizing director for Iowa, informed staffers. “If it feels like unsafe driving conditions, then talk to me separately but quite frankly I don’t want to hear any complaints because you know how important this is and how much time we have left.” Glad added: “By showing an ability to be adaptable, flexible, and willing to what [sic] you’ve been hired to do, then that is the most basic threshold of demonstrating your ability of leading others. The brainchild of Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution, the $250,000 annual World Food Prize recognizes those who have made outstanding contributions to global food security. For the most part, the building’s walls are decorated with portraits of agricultural researchers who helped to end world hunger—people like Mexican biochemist Evangelina Villegas Moreno and Indian geneticist Surinder Vasal, who together developed high-protein maize. But there is one notable exception. In the hall’s ballroom hangs a bronze plaque commemorating a 2012 visit by Xi Jinping, the president of China. Xi’s big contribution: His visit to Iowa ushered in the signing of a U.S.-China pledge to cooperate in agricultural research and business. To kick off the business end of the deal, the Chinese side agreed to buy $4.3-billion worth of U.S. soybeans—more than the entire U.S. production for that year. As the largest exporter of pork and corn in the United States and the number two exporter of soybeans, Iowa’s economy is increasingly propped up by China. Thanks to rising meat consumption and a dearth of arable land, China has a growing appetite for American agricultural products. Fully one in four rows of Iowa soybeans end up in China, meaning that Iowa’s farmers are, essentially, being kept afloat by China’s middle class." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The study (pdf), "Record-Setting Ocean Warmth Continued in 2019," which was published in Advances in Atmospheric Studies, found the oceans have warmed by around 0.075 degrees C above the average of 1981-2010. That level of warming, the paper found, is equal to 228,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (228 Sextillion) Joules of heat. Study lead author Lijing Cheng, associate professor with the International Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences analogized the level of heating to something more manageable for the human mind. "The amount of heat we have put in the world's oceans in the past 25 years equals to 3.6 billion Hiroshima atom-bomb explosions," said Cheng. "This measured ocean warming is irrefutable and is further proof of global warming. There are no reasonable alternatives aside from the human emissions of heat trapping gases to explain this heating.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The cable, sent Wednesday afternoon and marked “sensitive but unclassified,” turns a suspicion among immigration restrictionists that people are trying to game America’s visa system into official US policy, starting on Friday, January 24. The apparent goal is to clamp down on foreigners giving birth to children in the US who become, by birth, American citizens. A draft of the State Department guidance was first reported on by BuzzFeed on Tuesday. The guidance would create new barriers for pregnant people at consulates abroad applying for B visas, which are offered to short-term visitors, including tourists, business travelers, and people seeking urgent medical care. The government does not track how many pregnant travelers come to the US on B visas, but 2017 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that the new guidance would likely affect roughly 10,000 people annually. According to one State Department official, pregnant people applying for these kinds of visas may not receive the kind of care they need in their home country or have the money to get better care in the US." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

SurveyUSA asked 4,069 registered voters nationwide how they would vote in an election today if Trump was pitted against each of the 2020 candidates in the Democratic race. The progressive Vermont independent came out on top. The poll found that 52 percent of voters would choose Sanders and 43 percent Trump, giving the veteran senator a nine-point lead. Next was former vice president Joe Biden at 50 percent to Trump's 43 percent, a seven-point lead. Michael Bloomberg, the media and financial data billionaire, also led Trump by seven points at 49 percent to 42 percent. Democratic Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren leads Trump 48 percent to 45 percent, a three-point advantage. Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is also ahead of Trump by three points, at 47 percent to 44 percent. Health officials fear the transmission rate will accelerate as hundreds of millions of Chinese travel at home and abroad during week-long holidays for the Lunar New Year, which begins on Saturday. … Gilead Sciences Inc said it was assessing whether its experimental Ebola treatment could be used to treat coronavirus infection. "Gilead is in active discussions with researchers and clinicians in the United States and China regarding the ongoing Wuhan coronavirus outbreak and the potential use of remdesivir as an investigational treatment," a company spokesman said in an emailed statement. The company said that there was no antiviral data on the drug that showed activity against the coronavirus that was identified in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. She looked beautiful,” the teen’s mom, Kimberly Alford, told NBC affiliate WAVE of Louisville. “Of course, as a mom, I took her picture blowing out her candles, and I posted that on my Facebook page.” Alford said that shortly after she posted the photo, she received a letter from the head of Whitefield Academy, where her daughter, Kayla, was a freshman. “The WA Administration has been made aware of a recent picture, posted on social media, which demonstrates a posture of morality and cultural acceptance contrary to that of Whitefield Academy’s beliefs,” the letter, signed Jan. 6 by the head of the school, Bruce Jacobson, said. “We made it clear that any further promotion, celebration, or any other actions and attitudes that are counter to Whitefield’s philosophy would not be tolerated. As a result, we regret to inform you that Kayla is being dismissed from the school immediately.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Women and girls across the globe contribute an estimated £8.28tn ($10.8tn) to the global economy with a total of 12.5bn hours a day of unpaid care work, a figure more than three times the worth of the global tech industry, claims an Oxfam report published on Monday ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The charity says women around the world, especially those living in poverty, do more than three-quarters of all unpaid care work, which is chronically undervalued and taken for granted by businesses and governments alike. Ageing populations, cuts in public spending, and the climate crisis will exacerbate gender and economic inequality, the report warns. “When 22 men have more wealth than all the women in Africa combined, it’s clear that our economy is just plain sexist,” said Oxfam GB’s chief executive, Danny Sriskandarajah.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Staff members at the Virginia juvenile hall where he was held would call him pendejo and “onion head,” he said. After fleeing violence in Mexico at age 15 and arriving alone at the US border, he’d been sent to Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center in 2016 and held alongside American teens while he awaited immigration proceedings. Shenandoah is one of two juvenile halls nationally that the Office of Refugee Resettlement uses to hold unaccompanied minors who are deemed threatening. Now a group of district attorneys from around the country—including reformers Larry Krasner, Chesa Boudin, and Kim Foxx—have filed a brief citing concerns about the immigrant teens’ treatment there. Antonio hadn’t broken the law, but his detention in Virginia felt like a punishment: Once, when he got in a fight with an American kid who taunted him, he says staffers restrained him by tying him to a chair for four hours, allegedly hitting him while he sat there. Over a year and a half at Shenandoah, Antonio (not his real name) says he was tied to the chair about five times. In court documents, he recounted that staffers who restrained him would sometimes put a bag over his head, meant to deter biting or spitting. “It had small holes that I could see out of, but only a little,” he said." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In real life, this can all be very slow, with long and drawn-out arguments. But it’s still important to understand important issues like government corruption and the limits on power, and it’s worthy of discussion by an active and concerned citizenry. And clearly, the last thing Fox wants is an informed public." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

"He knows what I think about leaders. What happens if he reveals how I feel about another leader and it's not positive ... it would make the job a lot harder." Trump's statement, however, underscores why Democrats believe Bolton's testimony is crucial: he "knows some of" Trump's thoughts. The president's comments came just hours before opening arguments are set to kick off in his Senate trial — only the third in US history. Trump was impeached last month for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Bolton announced this month that he's willing to testify in the impeachment trial and is a firsthand witness to the president's efforts to strongarm Ukraine into pursuing investigations that would be politically beneficial to him while withholding vital military aid and a White House meeting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky desperately sought." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The encrypted message from the number used by Mohammed bin Salman is believed to have included a malicious file that infiltrated the phone of the world’s richest man, according to the results of a digital forensic analysis. This analysis found it “highly probable” that the intrusion into the phone was triggered by an infected video file sent from the account of the Saudi heir to Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post. The two men had been having a seemingly friendly WhatsApp exchange when, on 1 May of that year, the unsolicited file was sent, according to sources who spoke to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity. Large amounts of data were exfiltrated from Bezos’s phone within hours, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Guardian has no knowledge of what was taken from the phone or how it was used." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

It will eliminate pretrial detention and cash bail as an option in an estimated 90 percent of arrests. For the remaining cases, judges will maintain the option of setting cash bail. As the effective date nears, some have raised concerns, leading to the introduction of legislation to roll back the bail reform package or put a moratorium on implementation. Here are the facts about what the law does and doesn’t do. The law’s provisions For most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies, cash bail is no longer permitted. Judges must release individuals charged with those crimes with no cash bail, either on their own recognizance or with release conditions designed to ensure that the individual returns to court, such as pretrial supervision and text message reminders for court dates. For those charged with the most serious crimes — including almost all violent felonies and certain nonviolent felonies, such as sex offenses and witness tampering — very little has changed in New York. In those cases, judges will retain the option to set cash bail. In addition, the law has not changed what judges are permitted to consider in setting bail. Unlike almost all other states, judges in New York are not permitted to detain people due to concerns that they will pose a danger to the community if released. This part of the legislation is consistent with longstanding law in New York, which has prohibited the consideration of dangerousness in setting bail since 1971 in order to ensure that those charged with crimes are afforded the presumption of innocence." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In a short ad released Tuesday night, Biden's team accused Sanders of levying false and negative attacks on the former vice president for supposedly advocating for rollbacks to Social Security. Biden has had a record of entertaining cuts to the keystone program as a senator and vice president — a point Sanders' campaign has returned to numerous times since before the January primary debate. Biden's team argues he plans to expand Social Security if he were to win the White House. The Biden ad cited instances of the former vice president defending Social Security under the Obama administration and ended with a common refrain that he is the best equipped to beat President Donald Trump. The New York Times reported on Tuesday morning that Brazilian prosecutors alleged that Greenwald was part of a “criminal organization” that hacked into the cellphones of public officials and prosecutors. In multiple stories for The Intercept, which he co-founded, Greenwald published some of those leaked embarrassing messages and, per a criminal complaint, damaged the reputation of an anti-corruption task force. “The Bolsonaro government and the movement that supports it has made repeatedly clear that it does not believe in basic press freedoms—from Bolsonaro's threats against Folha to his attacks on journalists that have incited violence to Sergio Moro’s threats from the start to classify us as ‘allies of the hackers’ for revealing his corruption,” Greenwald said in a statement to The Daily Beast. “Less than two months ago, the Federal Police, examining all the same evidence cited by the Public Ministry, stated explicitly that not only have I never committed any crime but that I exercised extreme caution as a journalist never even to get close to any participation,” he continued. “Even the Federal Police under Minister Moro's command said what is clear to any rational person: I did nothing more than do my job as a journalist—ethically and within the law.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

This is the science.” “I’ve been repeating these numbers at nearly every speech I’ve given for the last 18 months.” “I know you don’t want to talk about this,” Thunberg continued, before adding that she intends to keep repeating herself until the appropriate action is taken." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Bernie Sanders, his campaign team, and his supporters. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the upcoming Hulu documentary, Hillary, Clinton laid into her 2016 Democratic primary rival who she has previously accused of contributing to her eventual election defeat to Donald Trump. Clinton said Sanders and his team have relentlessly attacked Democratic women, and she threw her support behind Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has faced abuse for claiming Sanders told her during a private meeting that a woman couldn’t win the election. Clinton’s stinging attack came the day after Sanders was forced to apologize to former Vice President Joe Biden because his campaign had promoted an overzealous op-ed by one of his surrogates accusing Biden of having a “big corruption problem.” The Hollywood Reporter was interviewing Clinton about the upcoming Hulu documentary and read her a quote from one of the scenes: “[Sanders] was in Congress for years. It’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Fifty-one percent of respondents to the poll want the Senate to convict Trump on the impeachment charges brought by the House, which would lead to his immediate expulsion from office. Meanwhile, 45 percent of respondents said they don't want to see the president removed. The poll was conducted from Jan. 16-19 and released Monday, on the eve of the Senate impeachment trial, which gets underway Tuesday, though senators were sworn in last week. The numbers are the most favorable for removal since another CNN poll in June 2018. Approval for impeachment and removal has generally hovered between 36 and 47 percent, peaking at 50 percent in polls from October and November 2019, once impeachment proceedings were underway in the House. The latest poll also suggests Americans are largely invested in the impeachment proceedings, with 74 percent of respondents saying they are either very closely or somewhat closely following the developments. The majority of respondents to CNN's survey said they want the Senate to hear from more witnesses, with 69 percent wanting the Senate to hear fresh testimony, and only 29 percent rejecting the idea." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

For this reason, we are breaking with convention and putting our support behind, not one, but two candidates.” Announcing the endorsement Sunday, the board said, "Senator Warren is a gifted storyteller and a brilliant architect of regulation, where we would push back on some specific policy proposals, we are struck by how effectively her message has matched the moment.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

During a Monday night segment on Cooper’s AC360, Dershowitz was confronted with a 1998 clip, unearthed the day before by CNN, where he confidently argued that no underlying crime was necessary to impeach a president who “corrupts the office” and “who abuses trust and who poses a great danger to our liberty.” That archival footage appeared to directly contradict Dershowitz’s Constitutional interpretation from last Friday, when he boldly claimed on MSNBC’s The Beat that “abuse of power, even if proved, is not an impeachable offense.” Confronted with the clip on air for the first time, Dershowitz began to mightily spin his past argument to comport with his current defense of Trump. “Well, that’s true. You don’t need a technical crime,” Dershowitz said, while Cooper and Toobin faces betrayed serious disbelief. “That’s my position today. I’ve said right from the beginning you need criminal-like behavior akin to bribery and treason. Remember…” “But that’s not what you said then,” Cooper pointed out." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Parnas went on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show Wednesday night, claiming the president “knew exactly what was going on.” He said that the president and Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, asked him to urge Ukrainian officials to publicly open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, his reelection rival. “He was aware of all of my movements,” Parnas told Maddow. “I wouldn’t do anything without the consent of Rudy Giuliani or the president.” Trump said Thursday that he doesn’t know Parnas at all, and dismissed the existence of photos of him and Parnas together, saying he takes pictures with “thousands of people including today that I didn’t meet.” He accused Parnas, who was indicted in October over an alleged campaign finance scheme, of trying to “make a deal for himself.” “I don’t know who this man is,” Trump said. “Oftentimes I’ll be taking a picture with somebody and say, I wonder what newspaper that one will appear in. I don’t know him. Perhaps he’s a fine man. Perhaps he’s not. I know nothing about him.” Trump has made an effort to distance himself from Parnas in the past. In October, after Parnas and his Florida-based partner, Igor Fruman, were indicted, the president denied knowing either of Giuliani’s associates." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

I’m a 26-year-old truck driver, and I’m running for Congress in Washington’s 10th District. I grew up poor in the Midwest; my college plans fell apart due to a car accident, and after trying my hand at several low-wage, unstable jobs, I started team-driving with my wife. As a truck driver, I’ve gotten to visit all 48 contiguous states; I’ve met regular working people from every corner of America, and our struggles are pretty much the same. Every time I needed a safety net, it wasn’t there. When I was younger, I thought it was the result of poor planning, or that I should just work harder, but a decade in the workforce has made the truth clear: our lives are made difficult on purpose. This system has been created and maintained by the people who own basically everything to protect their power. If we’re well-paid, secure in our housing, and educated, we demand a far bigger share. Our bosses will do anything in their power to prevent that. Congress is full of lawyers, investment bankers and corporate consultants. It’s a playground for the 1%, who have no empathy or understanding of our lives. Regular working people should be represented by individuals who live our lives and those who know what paycheck-to-paycheck feels like. We need nurses, teachers, and truck drivers in positions of power, fighting for our interests; that’s why I am running for US Congress." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Everything was false.” That wasn’t true, and the whistleblower report has held up quite nicely. The president added that he released a call summary of his July phone meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after Democrats “had done these fraudulent acts.” That was wrong, too. But at the same event, the Republican took some time to comment on his knowledge of Lev Parnas, a Rudy Giuliani associate involved with executing the Ukraine scheme. “Well, I don’t know him. I don’t know Parnas, other than I guess I had pictures taken, which I do with thousands of people, including people today that I didn’t meet. But – just met them. I don’t know him at all. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Tashonna Ward arrived at Froedtert Hospital's emergency room just before 5 p.m. on Jan. 2 due to shortness of breath and chest pain. According to a Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's report, Ward was seen for tests, and an X-ray showed that she had cardiomegaly or an enlarged heart. She was sent back to the waiting room where she waited for treatment and posted on Facebook about the long wait. "I been here since 4:30 something for shortness of breath, and chest pains for them to just say it’s a two to SIX hour wait to see a dr. Like that is really f------ ridiculous," her post read. After roughly two and a half hours in the emergency room, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Ward decided to go to an Urgent Care to seek help. According to the medical examiner's report, Ward said she sought help elsewhere because she "felt she was waiting too long.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

And now, the question is whether he can back them up. In an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Parnas claimed that President Trump knew “exactly what was going on” with his and Giuliani’s effort to get the Ukrainian government to announce investigations that would help Trump politically: “He was aware of all my movements.” Parnas also made assertions about what happened during various moments in the scandal. For instance, he said he conveyed a “harsh” message to an aide to Ukrainian President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting, threatening payback if no investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter materialized. When he got no response, Parnas said, Trump canceled Vice President Mike Pence’s trip to Zelensky’s inauguration. He also said that various Trump administration officials, from Pence to Attorney General William Barr, were in on the plot — though these assertions especially haven’t been corroborated. About the only person who was out of the loop, according to Parnas, was Robert F. Hyde, the Republican congressional candidate who was thrust into the news Tuesday, when texts he’d sent to Parnas that suggested he was having Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch surveilled were made public. Parnas said, though, that Hyde was a “weird” character who was probably making everything up." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

After Trump signs the three-nation pact, it needs only Canada’s approval to take effect. The Senate rushed to pass the agreement before the expected start of the president’s impeachment trial next week. The House delivered articles of impeachment to the upper chamber on Wednesday, and the Senate could take weeks to decide whether to convict Trump and remove him from office. USMCA will head to the president more than 14 months after the North American nations agreed to the deal. The Trump administration worked with Democrats to resolve concerns about enforcement of labor and environmental standards — changes that led most but not all of the party’s lawmakers to support the agreement. The Senate’s passage of USMCA came a day after Trump signed a partial trade deal with China. The agreement with Beijing does not require congressional approval. USMCA makes several tweaks to the North American Free Trade Agreement, which took effect in 1994. Trump and Democrats alike argued that the earlier deal, which opened more free trade across the three countries, damaged American workers by encouraging companies to move jobs out of the U.S." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Parnas has become a key figure in the unfolding and still-fluid story, and on Wednesday night revealed many details from his experience in Kyiv dealing with Trump’s personal attorney Giuliani, claiming that his entire mission was to get Ukraine President Zelinsky to launch or announce an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden. Parnas made clear that in his esteem, there was a clear quid pro quo, and that the Trump administration was threatening to withhold not just military aid to Ukraine, but “all aid” unless the investigation into the Bidens were started. He also implicated President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Attorney General William Barr, recently ousted National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Rep. Devin Nunes, nearly all of whom have clearly denied what Parnas has alleged." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Claiming that the information was “brand new” at the time and he just didn’t “recognize the name Parnas,” the pro-Trump congressman added that he was able to recall “where he was at the time” and now “remembered that call, which was very odd and random.” Asked whether or not they spoke about former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Nunes asserted that the first time he “heard the name Yovanovitch was not until this impeachment sham started.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

She didn’t give a straight answer once. After Fox aired a clip of Parnas’ interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow from Wednesday night, they asked her to refute his central claims. Conway first tried to laugh it off, joking with no sense of irony, “Remember, people who go on TV are never under oath.” Meanwhile, the Trump White House has blocked witnesses from testifying under oath and criticized the credibility of those who have. But that argument didn’t satisfy Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer, who repeatedly grilled Conway on the substance of what Parnas was saying. “Are you saying flat-out, 100 percent what he alleges is not true, yes or no?” Hemmer asked. Instead of answering yes or no, Conway went on to offer up an “objection” to the idea that Parnas could know Trump was aware of his movements. “You cannot say what someone else knew or thought,” she said. “That was a TV show, not a court of law.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The blue-chip index passed the 28,000 mark just 37 days ago. “11,000 points gained in the Dow in the 3 years since the Election of President Trump," President Donald Trump tweeted on Friday morning ahead of the milestone. "Today it may hit 29,000. That has NEVER happened before in that time frame. That has added 12.8 Trillion Dollars to the VALUE of American Business.” @Varneyco @FoxNews The best is yet to come!” The new milestone for the 30-member index came after a disappointing monthly government labor report, with just 145,000 jobs gained for the month of December, sluggish gains in annual wage growth, and downward revisions for November and October job totals. The Dow hit 28,000 on Nov. 15 and needed just 48 points Friday to breach the 29,000 mark, having flirted with the number all day Thursday after a de-escalation in the conflict with Iran soothed investor fears, energy prices settled, and Apple posted record gains on higher-than-expected sales in China. Gains in Apple, Goldman Sachs, and healthcare stocks helped push the index upwards." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

We claimed the downtown area for hours, demanding increased climate action from our decision-makers. Children of all ages attended, marching for their right to grow up in a healthy world. In the last decade the not-in-my-backyard phenomenon has turned into a not-in-my-lifetime one. After attending the United Nations climate conferences as a youth delegate for years, I have watched governments around the world put short-term economic gain before the long-term well-being of the planet and my generation. Although 195 nations committed to rapidly reduce greenhouse-gas emissions to keep the global average temperature well below 2°C relative to pre-industrial levels, many countries are nowhere near achieving their targets. In Canada, for example, current policy decisions have resulted not only in no reductions, but an increase in greenhouse-gas emissions. The latest national inventory report indicated that emissions rose by 8m tonnes from 2016 to 2017, an increase of about 1%. This accountability problem is rampant across the world, yet few legal systems are equipped to address it. Although climate litigation is becoming a new front for climate action, with hundreds of cases arising around the world, they are limited in scope. Today, for the most part, only current generations have legal standing to sue; and to do so, they have to prove the impacts that they have experienced or are experiencing. This is problematic in the context of climate change because the effects of greenhouse-gas emissions take decades to manifest themselves. This renders it incredibly difficult to contest today’s polluting activities as their impacts have not been felt yet. It is also why governments feel little pressure to meet their commitments or take strong action." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

And boy, are they ugly. The documents, which include Parnas’s handwritten notes, copies of text messages, and other correspondence, reveal some new information — including that Giuliani claimed to be acting with President Trump’s “knowledge and consent” in his communications with the Ukrainian government. One handwritten note of Parnas’s, scribbled on Ritz-Carlton hotel stationery, clearly states his main objective in his dealings with Ukraine: to get Ukraine’s president to announce “the Biden case will be investigated.” The documents also provide the strongest evidence yet that there was a corrupt understanding involving prosecutor general Yuriy Lutsenko (a Ukrainian official in the previous regime). Lutsenko offered to investigate Burisma and the Bidens — and, in exchange, he insisted that US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, whom he had clashed with, be fired. He made this quid pro quo clear in his messages to Parnas. Particularly disturbing is a set of messages Parnas received from a person named Robert F. Hyde, a Republican congressional candidate. Hyde texted Parnas that he had people tracking Yovanovitch’s movements closely in Ukraine. He claimed he could tell whether her phone and computer were off. And he wrote: “If you want her out they need to make contact with security forces.” (It is not yet clear whether these claims by Hyde were true. On Wednesday morning, Parnas’s lawyer denied they were, and said Hyde had a “dubious mental state.”)" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The different accounts from Sanders and Warren of the conversation at their December 2018 meeting was a highlight of Tuesday night’s debate. CNN moderator Abby Phillip raised the issue about an hour into the two-hour debate, asking Sanders about CNN’s report of the conversation. “Sen. Sanders, CNN reported yesterday, and Sen. Warren confirmed in a statement, that in 2018 you told her that you did not believe that a woman could win the election. Why did you say that?” Phillips asked Sanders. “Well, as a matter of fact, I didn’t say it,” Sanders responded. “I don’t want to waste a whole lot of time on this, because this is what Donald Trump and maybe some of the media want. No, really. Trump’s counterprogramming to the Democratic debate ended up being a relatively uneventful rally by his standards. But the contrast between the two events couldn’t have been more stark, and threw the stakes of the 2020 election into sharp relief. “Somebody said, ‘Oh, sir, don’t mention the lightbulb,’” Trump said at one point, right around the same time that former Vice President Joe Biden was defending his vote for the Iraq War. “The new lightbulb costs five times as much, and it makes you look orange. And I was more interested in the orange than I was in the cost.” Trump transitioned to hyping “new dishwashers that give you more water so you can actually watch and rinse your dishes without having to do it 10 times” — comments that suggest he’s not overly familiar with how dishwashers function." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

They get up every single morning and dedicate their day to creating value for this country and its businesses, big and small. Even though they create enormous wealth for America, and their hard work is essential to our economic success, most have been left behind. Right now, half of all Americans are living paycheck to paycheck, in debt, with no path to a higher paying job. Many can’t afford to get health care even if they work full time. College tuition is out of reach for most working families. How do you go to school or get skills for a higher paying job if you’re on your feet all day trying to make ends meet just to survive? You can’t. America’s top health insurance company, just one corporation, reported $226 Billion in revenue last year. The top 10 pharmaceuticals reported almost half a trillion in revenue for 2018. Yet ~30 million Americans have no access to health insurance, while ~48 million have inadequate access to health care even with insurance. Families are left to decide between groceries or prescription drugs. There’s no way out for them. And this is wrong." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Huntsman, whose last day will be Friday, said she wanted to join the gubernatorial race of her father, Jon Huntsman, the former Utah governor who announced last November that he is running for the job again in 2020. But behind the scenes, there was more to her surprise announcement. Half a dozen people who spoke to CNN Business described a toxic work environment, including a soured relationship between Huntsman and McCain. The dispute with McCain was just one factor in Huntsman's feeling that she should leave." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Elizabeth Warren said Monday night that she has "no interest in discussing this private meeting any further," but after making an explosive charge against her 2020 Democratic rival Sen. Bernie Sanders that stated desire is clearly not going to matter very much—and critics of how Warren levied the accusation suggested that could likely be the point. "Warren and Sanders need to squash this by tomorrow night's debate. I think Warren's in the wrong. But more importantly: this helps Biden." —Emma Vigeland, The Young Turks In a statement issued by her campaign's communication manager Kristen Orthman, Warren claimed that in a private 2018 conversation Sanders "disagreed" with her that a woman candidate could beat President Donald Trump in the 2020 general election—a difference of opinion she characterized as having something to do with "punditry." What Sanders was alleged to have said in the 2018 conversation was first made by anonymous sources "familiar with" the meeting in a report earlier Monday by CNN—a piece of journalism pilloried by critics as an irresponsible hit job. In response to the claims in the story, Sanders said it was "ludicrous to believe that at the same meeting where Elizabeth Warren told me she was going to run for president, I would tell her that a woman couldn't win.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told fellow presidential hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) that a woman can’t win the race, The View co-host Meghan McCain said on Tuesday that Sanders “has a problem with women” and that she doesn’t “want another misogynist in the White House.” At the top of Tuesday’s broadcast of ABC’s chatfest, the table discussed the fallout from the story, which dropped a day before Tuesday night’s Democratic primary debate. Sanders has denied that he made the comment to Warren, while the Massachusetts senator insisted in a statement that it did happen. Co-host Sunny Hostin said she doesn’t “doubt that he perhaps said that.” “Because when you read Hillary [Clinton]’s book, she does say that all of the innuendo and all of the Bernie Sanders attacks really led the way and paved the way for Trump calling her ‘Crooked Hillary,’” Hostin added. “So she thinks Bernie’s attacks really harmed her.” McCain, meanwhile, insisted that this is a big story because Sanders “hurt Hillary Clinton so much in the last election.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Giuliani, who has acted as Trump’s attorney for free since early 2018, has been “working Trump hard” to be included among the lawyers who will defend him on the floor of the Senate, according to an informal adviser close to the White House who spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House declined to comment on Giuliani. A second informal adviser said Giuliani has not really been aggressively lobbying, but has made it known that he is “available” to offer his services. “They said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’” the adviser said, also on condition of anonymity. Giuliani did not respond to HuffPost’s queries on the matter." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The Post obtained internal figures showing the White House plans. If they go forward, it would be the second time the president has ordered that funds allocated to the Pentagon by Congress be diverted for wall construction, effectively bypassing lawmakers in an attempt to unilaterally deliver on a campaign promise. Trump has vowed to build 450 miles of new wall by the end of 2020 in hopes of galvanizing his political base before the next election. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump declared a national emergency last February in order to build his much-touted border wall, saying the White House planned to divert $3.6 billion in funds from Pentagon construction projects to help pay for it. The proposal drew widespread fury from Congress and a spate of lawsuits. The Supreme Court, however, said in July that Trump had the authority to use the money for the wall, and subsequent challenges have been knocked back by the courts. Earlier this month, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit lifted an injunction from a lower court and said the diversion of Pentagon funds could go forward. The Pentagon said in September the initial funding diversion would delay or suspend 127 military construction projects both in the U.S. and overseas." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks
