Peter King (R-NY), who has served in the House of Representatives for nearly three decades, announced his retirement Monday, becoming the 20th House Republican to retire ahead of the 2020 election. “The prime reason for my decision was that after 28 years of spending 4 days a week in Washington, D.C., it is time to end the weekly commute and be home in Seaford,” King, who is 75, wrote in a statement. “There is a season for everything and [my wife] and I decided that, especially since we are both in good health, it is time to have the flexibility to spend more time with our children and grandchildren.” King is an ally of President Donald Trump with his own history of controversial stances, from his support for the Irish Republican Army, to his claim that “80 to 85 percent of mosques in this country are controlled by Islamic fundamentalists,” to blaming Eric Garner rather than the New York City police officer who killed him for his death: “If he had not had asthma, and a heart condition, and was so obese, he would not have died from this.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A new (anonymous) book 'A Warning' depicts hysteria, racism, and total lawlessness from inside Trump's White House. John Iadarola and Brett Erlich discuss on The Damage Report. In A Warning, which describes the president as a cruel, narcissistic buffoon and seems to be aimed at readers who’ve been in a coma for the past four years, Anonymous writes that in 2018, top Trump officials weighed resigning en masse in an attempt to sound alarms about their boss, but ultimately declined to do so out of concern that their “midnight self-massacre” could leave the government even more debilitated. “I am not qualified to diagnose the president’s mental acuity,” the author writes, according to excerpts of the book obtained by the Washington Post. “All I can tell you is that normal people who spend any time with Donald Trump are uncomfortable by what they witness. He stumbles, slurs, gets confused, is easily irritated, and has trouble synthesizing information, not occasionally but with regularity. Those who would claim otherwise are lying to themselves or to the country.”* #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

But — to the extent that the billionaire philanthropist manages to garner any support at all — the actual effect of him entering the race is likely to be the reverse: undermining frontrunner Joe Biden to some extent without materially damaging Warren or Sanders or having any realistic chance of winning himself. The key is that in recent years moderates who’ve successfully fended off the left wing of the Democratic Party have done so with the support of black and Latino voters, who tend to be more moderate on the whole than white Democrats. But Bloomberg’s specific political career gives him little access to this constituency and thus little hope of securing the nomination."* #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #2020

Bernie Sanders declared that it is time "to break Facebook up.” When British investigative journalist Duncan Campbell first shared the trove of documents with a handful of media outlets including NBC News in April, journalists Olivia Solon and Cyrus Farivar reported that "Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg oversaw plans to consolidate the social network's power and control competitors by treating its users' data as a bargaining chip, while publicly proclaiming to be protecting that data." With the publication Wednesday of nearly 7,000 pages of records—which include internal Facebook emails, web chats, notes, presentations, and spreadsheets—journalists and the public can now have a closer look at exactly how the company was using the vast amount of data it collects when it came to bargaining with third parties. Technically still under protective order in a California state civil lawsuit that the startup app developer Six4Three filed against Facebook in 2015, the leaked documents from the case include 3,799 pages of sealed exhibits, 2,737 pages of exhibits, 415 pages of related notes and summaries, and a 20-page memorandum (pdfs). More than 1,000 pages are labeled "highly confidential.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Sanders’s progressive bona fides on immigration have been questioned in the past. In the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton criticized the senator for voting against comprehensive immigration reform in 2007 — a bill that would have opened a pathway to citizenship for 12 million undocumented immigrants while investing in border security. (Sanders, who has long supported a pathway to citizenship, says he voted against the bill because of the lack of labor protections in the bill’s guest worker provisions.) He has also repeatedly warned against “open borders,” which he calls a “Koch brothers proposal,” arguing it would depress wages for American workers. “If you open the borders, my God, there’s a lot of poverty in this world, and you’re going to have people from all over the world,” Sanders said at an April town hall in Iowa. “And I don’t think that’s something that we can do at this point. No matter what caveats exist in each state, that’s great news for the Democratic Party heading into 2020. Beyond his turnout wins, Beshear’s message could give the national party hope. He ran primarily on health care and education — vowing to protect Medicaid and boost funding for teachers — a strategy Democrats could replicate in other Trump-friendly states and regions like West Virginia, another state that has seen teachers strikes. Democrats also won their enthusiasm test in Virginia. A caveat here — Virginia has been trending more and more blue every year, so winning was not a huge surprise. However, Democrats were looking for signs of enthusiasm, and they got them in Virginia. Anecdotally, turnout was up significantly in the state. That’s important especially because Virginia had no governor’s race or US Senate contest on the ballot, presenting both Democrats and Republicans with a unique opportunity to show how strong the party apparatus was."

Fonda had no time for her. The interview started out as a love-fest between Fonda, Joy Behar, and Whoopi Goldberg, who asked their guest what’s like to spend a night in jail for protesting climate change at age 81. “You know, the conditions weren't great for old bones like mine on a metal slab,” Fonda said, “but the saddest part of it was seeing how—because our country doesn't give enough money to resources like social safety nets and mental health institutions—there's so many people in jail, you know, for poverty and racism and mental health issues.” “But is there a way to do it without breaking the law? You think of all the peaceful protests that have led to change,” Huntsman said, implying somehow that Fonda’s protests have been anything but peaceful. “I worry about living in an uncivil society.” " #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Now, a new witness has come forward claiming that it was the victim’s fiancé, a former police officer, who killed the woman, not Reed. The new information has shed light on what many criminal justice advocates say is a case of another black man caught up in a system that was stacked against him. On October 30, Reed’s lawyers and the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization for criminal justice reform, filed an application for clemency with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles following the sworn affidavit of Arthur Snow, who says ex-officer Jimmy Fennell confessed to the murder of Stacy Stites when the two men were in prison together. The headline-grabbing contest was Democrat Andy Beshear beating Republican incumbent Gov. Matt Bevin in the Kentucky governor’s race — a state President Donald Trump won by a whopping 30 percent in 2016. Some caveats: Bevin was among the most unpopular governors in the country, and other Republican leaders in the state outperformed him on Tuesday. But Beshear’s win was still a big loss for Trump, who campaigned in Kentucky just a day before the election, explicitly tying Bevin’s race to his own reputation. The results also showed that Democrats in Kentucky were fired up — Beshear outperformed the 2015 Democratic gubernatorial candidate in many areas of the state. The other huge story was Virginia’s state legislature elections, where Democrats flipped both the state House and Senate, ensuring a trifecta with Gov. Ralph Northam (D) already in the governor’s mansion. Virginia has been trending blue for years, but the fact that Democrats generated so much enthusiasm in an off-year where state legislature elections were the biggest thing on the ballot means the party is organized and enthusiastic, even for traditionally sleepier races." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The audio — purportedly from an emergency meeting that took place on August 13, 2017, the day after the far-right “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, disintegrated into violence, resulting in the murder of a counterprotester named Heather Heyer — features Spencer screaming racist and anti-Semitic slurs he has generally avoided using in public in an effort to more politely argue for “the creation of a White Ethno-State.” Spencer is perhaps the most prominent and arguably the most successful of the so-called “alt-right” white nationalist activists attempting to inject overtly racist ideas into mainstream political thought. In fact, Spencer can be credited (alongside Peter Brimelow and Paul Gottfried) with inventing the term “alt-right,” resulting in the magazine Alternative Right in 2010. The database shows 115 cases by right-wing extremists ― from white supremacists to militias to “sovereign citizens” ― compared to 63 cases by Islamist extremists. "We will continue to work with our global partners to enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change and prepare for and respond to natural disasters," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement Monday. Nearly 200 countries signed on to the agreement in 2015 and made national pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Each country set its own goals, and many wealthy countries, including the U.S., also agreed to help poorer countries pay for the costs associated with climate change. The U.S. is now the only country to pull out of the pact. During the broad-range conversation, Wallace noted that Trump and his fellow Republicans have complained about the closed-door interviews being held with the inquiry’s witnesses, but the GOP used to hold a more favorable view of those kinds of hearings during the Benghazi investigation. “Why is it okay for Republicans, when they are in charge, to conduct hearings, depositions, interviews behind closed doors but its unacceptable for Democrats?” Wallace asked. Conway pivoted from the question in order to attack Hillary Clinton, eventually complaining that Trump has had “no due process” and “there is no analogy” between impeachment and any other type of congressional hearing. Giuliani showed up at the San Francisco store after being locked out of his iPhone, just 26 days after Trump named him cybersecurity adviser, NBC News reported Thursday, citing interviews with two sources and an internal Apple Store memo. The former New York mayor had entered his passcode incorrectly 10 times and went to the store for help — a troubling move that suggests a sloppy approach to cybersecurity for someone so close to the president, experts said. “There’s no way he should be going to a commercial location to ask for that assistance,” E.J. Hilbert, a former FBI cybercrime agent, told NBC, saying that Giuliani could be vulnerable to hackers and should have turned to White House technical officials for help." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Now that little postcard threatens the voting rights of millions but it can be reversed. The instant-news media, working from press releases, not the Supreme Court’s decision itself, said that Husted, Ohio Secretary of State v. A. Philip Randolph Institute was about whether Ohio has the right to remove voters who failed to cast ballots in two federal election cycles. Nope. Even the Court’s right-wing majority concedes that federal law strictly forbids removing voters because they skipped some elections. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 states that a voter purge program “shall not result in the removal of the name of any person by reason of the person’s failure to vote.” But here’s the trick: In 2002, the George W. Bush administration ginned up the Help America Vote Act. When a Bush tells you he’s going to “help” you vote, look out. Yet, naïve Democrats passed the act into law. The Help America Vote Act is filled with buried land mines that are still exploding." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Over the past two years, Trump’s behavior has become both more disturbing and yet increasingly familiar. He relies on phrases like, “fake news,” “build the wall,” and continues to spread the divisive mentality of us-vs.-them. He lies constantly, has no conscience, never admits when he is wrong, and projects all of his shortcomings on to others. He has become more authoritarian, more outrageous, and yet many of his followers remain blindly devoted. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert and a major Trump supporter, calls him one of the most persuasive people living. His need to squash alternate information and his insistence of constant ego stroking are all characteristics of other famous leaders—cult leaders. In The Cult of Trump, mind-control and licensed mental health expert Steven Hassan draws parallels between our current president and people like Jim Jones, David Koresh, Ron Hubbard and Sun Myung Moon, arguing that this presidency is in many ways like a destructive cult. He specifically details the ways in which people are influenced through an array of social psychology methods and how they become fiercely loyal and obedient. Hassan was a former “Moonie” himself, and he draws on his forty years of personal and professional experience studying hypnosis and destructive cults, working as a deprogrammer, and a strategic communications interventionist. He emphasizes why it’s crucial that we recognize ways to identify and protect ourselves and our loved ones." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

"I wish I could say I was shocked, but a major spill from the Keystone pipeline is exactly what multiple experts predicted would happen," Greenpeace USA senior research specialist Tim Donaghy said in a statement. "In fact, this is the fourth significant spill from the Keystone pipeline in less than ten years of operation. History has shown us time and again that there is no safe way to transport fossil fuels, and pipelines are no exception." As 350.org founder Bill McKibben tweeted in response to the leak, "It happens over and over and over and over and over." The latest Keystone spill was first detected Tuesday night by TC Energy, the pipeline's owner, and the extent of the damage to the surrounding areas is not yet known to the public. According to Greenpeace, the leak "is already the eighth-largest pipeline oil spill of the last decade." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The former Breitbart editor enlisted the services of Cambridge Analytica to drum up fringe voters from swing states such as Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. The strategy was successful and Republicans secured the White House—attaining 306 electoral college votes to Democrats' 232—but explosive revelations from Wylie in 2018 changed the way people understood that win. His whistleblowing revealed that Cambridge Analytica harvested the profiles of 50 million Facebook users and how that data was used alongside publicly available voter records to identify people more likely to vote for the Trump campaign." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

But one of the GOP lawmakers who actually is eligible to be in the room for depositions, as he is a Foreign Affairs committee member, simply didn’t go to hearings and hasn’t read testimony. How do we know this? Because Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.) said as much during a wild and revealing CNN interview on Tuesday. Rep. Yoho predicted the impeachment inquiry sparked by the Ukraine whistleblower’s complaint about the Trump-Zelensky phone call of July 25 will end as well for Democrats as Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif.) claim that “irrefutable information” would show there was collusion with Russia. But Yoho doesn’t seem to know what has actually been said. CNN’s Poppy Harlow pressed him on this, even asking him why he was on her show when he could be asking Lt. Colonel Alexander Vindman questions. Vindman is an Army officer who listened to the Trump-Zelensky call and twice reported concerns to his superiors about the president’s tactics. He is testifying behind closed doors Tuesday on Capitol Hill." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Now the company is barring him from doing so — and the man told CNN Business he's now considering legal action. Adriel Hampton, a political activist, registered as a candidate for California's 2022 gubernatorial election on Monday so he could take advantage of Facebook's policy allowing politicians and political candidates to run false ads on the platform. On Tuesday evening, a Facebook (FB) spokesperson told CNN Business, "This person has made clear he registered as a candidate to get around our policies, so his content, including ads, will continue to be eligible for third-party fact-checking.” Ads from people and groups other than politicians are subject to fact-checking. Hampton had pulled the stunt with the hope of forcing the company to change its policy and stop allowing politicians to run false ads." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Col. Alexander Vindman began testifying Tuesday in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, the president’s allies coalesced around a new talking point. Vindman, some pundits contended, may be loyal to Ukraine because he was born there. The attack on the Army officer — who came to the United States at age 3, was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded in Iraq and now serves as a top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council — quickly drew condemnation. “If that’s all they’ve got, is to question the patriotism of a lieutenant colonel who took a bullet for us and has a Purple Heart on the battlefield, well, good look to them,” said Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.). “My goodness.” Vindman was among the White House officials who listened in on the call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that is at the heart of the impeachment inquiry. He was expected to tell House investigators that he worried Trump’s request that Ukraine investigate his political rival would undermine national security." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A new study out showing that millennials are set to inherit $68 trillion from their parents by the year 2020, and this is right up your alley, Chris, this kind of thing. Millennials get a bad rap, and then wonder what they'll do with the money. Maybe people will start asking. But this is something else. It's already, by the way, a lot. There's 618,000 millennial millionaires apparently out there, according to these numbers. CHRIS HOGAN (AUTHOR): Yeah. This is -- I mean, we're about to go through one of the largest wealth transfers in history. And if these millennials don't have a game plan and don't understand how to handle it -- MCSHANE: You see a business opportunity for yourself. HOGAN: This is going to be a very short transfer window. Meaning that the opportunity to go out and invest in things they don't understand, not setting up their next generation. This is the mindset. Legacies don't happen by accident." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Back then, I was bartending and trying to write the great American novel. Don’t bother googling me, that didn’t happen! Everything changed for me when I moved to Stuyvesant Town in 2009. One random day, my apartment became retroactively rent-stabilized as part of a lawsuit. My rent went down by $1100 - but the harassment went up. I had to fight two eviction notices in housing court, resist sudden rent hikes, and endure all kinds of harassment. I found out the same thing was happening to lots of my neighbors, so I joined the tenants association to help organize our buildings against a series of bad corporate landlords. I became immersed in the world of tenant organizing and saw how bad things were across the city for so many New Yorkers who rent. Most people couldn’t fight back the way I could in Stuytown. So I made up my mind to help. I kept bartending and got my Masters in Urban Planning at Columbia University studying tenant organizing and community land trusts (while racking up an ungodly amount of student debt.)" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks
