Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Ayanna Pressley, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, all of whom are US citizens. Omar was born in Somalia and became a naturalized citizen as a teenager. Ocasio-Cortez was born in the Bronx (neighboring Trump’s birthplace in Queens), Tlaib hails from Detroit, and Pressley was born in Chicago. Omar, Tlaib, and Pressley recently spoke at the progressive Netroots Nation conference, alongside Rep. Deb Haaland. There, they strongly criticized Trump and his policies and shared their visions for the country." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A deadly opening attack. Nearly untraceable, ruthless proxies spreading chaos on multiple continents. Costly miscalculations. And thousands — perhaps hundreds of thousands — killed in a conflict that would dwarf the war in Iraq. Welcome to the US-Iran war, which has the potential to be one of the worst conflicts in history. Washington and Tehran remain locked in a months-long standoff with no end in sight. The US has imposed crushing sanctions on Iran’s economy over its support for terrorism and its growing missile program, among other things, after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal last year; Iran has fought back by violating parts of the nuclear agreement and downing an American military drone. To hear President Donald Trump tell it, that last incident brought the US within 10 minutes of launching warplanes and dropping bombs on Iran. Had Trump gone through with the planned strike, it’s possible both nations would now be engaged in a much more violent, much bloodier struggle." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Carlson, a controversial conservative host and Donald Trump supporter, criticized Omar in a three-minute monologue full of anti-immigrant rhetoric and personal attacks on Omar and her family. In the segment, aired on Tuesday night, he described her as “living proof that the way we practice immigration has become dangerous to this country” and “a living fire alarm”. He also accused Omar of having “undisguised contempt for the United States and for its people”. Omar, who fled civil war in Somalia with her family in 1991 and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in the US as a child under a resettlement program and making history when she was elected to Congress last year, responded to Carlson on Twitter. She wrote: “Not gonna lie, it’s kinda fun watching a racist fool like this weeping about my presence in Congress. No lies will stamp out my love for this country or my resolve to make our union more perfect. They will just have to get used to calling me congresswoman!” Her tweet has been favorited more than 84,000 times." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A 16-year-old Guatemalan boy held in Yuma, Arizona, said he and others in his cell complained about the taste of the water and the food they were given. The Customs and Border Protection agents took the mats out of their cell in retaliation, forcing them to sleep on hard concrete. A 15-year-old girl from Honduras described a large, bearded officer putting his hands inside her bra, pulling down her underwear and groping her as part of what was meant to be a routine pat-down in front of other immigrants and officers. The girl said "she felt embarrassed as the officer was speaking in English to other officers and laughing" during the entire process, according to a report of her account." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A day after the 66-year-old financier was charged in a New York court with sex trafficking and accused of luring dozens of girls to his luxury homes and coercing them into performing sex acts, the president was asked about his relationship with him. Epstein had once been a regular at Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, but the president claimed he long ago had a falling out with him. “I knew him like everybody in Palm Beach knew him. The people in Palm Beach knew him. He was a fixture in Palm Beach,” Mr Trump told reporters, in a seemingly awkward exchange at the White House, where the president was meeting with Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim Bin-Hamad Al-Thani. “I had a falling out with him a long time ago. I don’t think I have spoken with him for 15 years. I was not a fan. A long time ago. I’d say maybe 15 years. On Monday’s broadcast of “Making Money with Charles Payne,” Trend Macrolytics’ chief investment officer Donald Luskin said working forever and not retiring “doesn’t worry me personally.” In fact, he described having to work until death “as a great blessing.” Luskin explained: I guess I’m one of those people who plans never to retire. I mean, is bowling that interesting? Is fishing that interesting? I happen to love my work. Why do I want to stop it? It’s not like it hurts. Why would I stop it? This is great. What a great country where we have the opportunity to keep working. What a miracle where our lives are long enough and we’re healthy enough and mentally alert enough so we don’t have to retire like generations before us. This is a great blessing. You should embrace it. Payne asked Luskin about the people who want to retire, but can’t afford to do so. Luskin acknowledged it is “a problem,” but said questions had to be asked." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

No, but a photo of the two men that appeared on Facebook on Feb. 4 suggested as much. "For the life of me, and I’ll never know how to explain it, when I met that young man, I felt like I was the one shaking hands with the president," the post claims Reagan said about meeting Trump. It was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.) Though there are several photos of the former president and Trump together, the meetings didn’t inspire Reagan to wax poetic about the current commander in chief. The photo being shared here is authentic and dates back to Nov. 3, 1987, said Joanne Drake, chief administrative officer of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute. The image shows then-president Reagan shaking Trump's hand in the Blue Room at a reception for members of an art and preservation in embassies foundation. But Drake said the quote attributed to the 40th president about the would-be 45th president is inaccurate: "He did not ever say that about Donald Trump," she said. The Washington Post’s Michael Kranish reported that Trump’s admission to the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance — one of Trump’s go-to brags to play up his credentials — was hardly the feat he has claimed. In fact, Trump leaned on his older brother’s friendship with an admissions officer to get into the school. And even then, he was clearing a much lower bar than exists for acceptance to the prestigious school today. Here are the key parts: James Nolan was working in the University of Pennsylvania’s admissions office in 1966 when he got a phone call from one of his closest friends, Fred Trump Jr. It was a plea to help Fred’s younger brother, Donald Trump, get into Penn’s Wharton School. “He called me and said, ‘You remember my brother Donald?’ Which I didn’t,” Nolan, 81, said in an interview with The Washington Post. “He said, ‘He’s at Fordham and he would like to transfer to Wharton. Will you interview him?’ I was happy to do that.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Trump’s tweet came shortly after Fox & Friends aired a segment on the Monday night protests at the St. Louis Park City Council chambers for deciding to do away with the pledge. According to the Star Tribune, the city council voted 5-0 on June 17 to cut the pledge out of most meetings, due to concerns that some residents in the “increasingly diverse community” may find it unwelcoming. The Star Tribune reported that last month’s vote was met with backlash at the local and national level, with hundreds of people calling or emailing the city to protest. St. Louis Park City Mayor Jake Spano announced on Twitter later that week that the council would be revisiting its decision. The meeting ended with Spano proposing that the council reverse its decision, and Council Member Anne Mavity introducing a proposal for the St. Louis Park community and city staff meet to discuss next steps. Biden, speaking with CNN's Chris Cuomo in Des Moines, Iowa, suggested that "Medicare for All" is irrational, argued that the majority of Democrats are "center left" not "way left," and said Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while "brilliant" and "bright," did not represent Democrats who can win a general election in a competitive district or state. Biden also addressed his performance during the first Democratic debate, saying that he wasn't prepared for California Sen. Kamala Harris to confront him on issues of race the way she did. The interview made clear that Biden, who is facing criticism from the left of the party amid an increasingly contentious Democratic primary, does not feel the need to sway to the left to capture the party's base and, instead, hopes to set himself apart by embracing his moderation. Biden backed up that confidence by pointing to the 2018 midterm elections, where a host of swing districts were won by more moderate Democrats." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Pelosi was once dubbed “Mussolini in a skirt,” while she has compared the Donald to Il Duce, clocking their shared need to be at the center of all conversations. And the most powerful woman and most powerful man in the country are both devilishly good at trolling — usually one another. “If he could be president, this glass of water could be president!” Madam Speaker exclaimed disgustedly, as we ate omelets in a restaurant by the bay after she mingled with adoring constituents in last Sunday’s glittery, feathery Pride parade. Many in the crowd were still grateful to Pelosi, now 79, that in her first moments on the floor of the House in 1987, as the plague decimating gay men raged, she defied the advice of Democratic elders and sang out that she had come to Washington to fight AIDS." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Ocasio-Cortez has come under fire from right-wing politicians and commentators for her well-publicized visits to the detention centers. The congresswoman said that staff there—who she claimed treated her in a threatening and aggressive manner—engage in routine abuse of detainees, who are being held in unsanitary and unsafe conditions. After Conway accused her of lying about the camps—the poor conditions of which were further detailed by the Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday—Ocasio-Cortez asked on Twitter, "How many migrant women has Kellyanne Conway touched? In one exchange, group members responded with indifference and wisecracks to the post of a news story about a 16-year-old Guatemalan migrant who died in May while in custody at a Border Patrol station in Weslaco, Texas. One member posted a GIF of Elmo with the quote, “Oh well.” Another responded with an image and the words “If he dies, he dies.” Created in August 2016, the Facebook group is called “I’m 10-15” and boasts roughly 9,500 members from across the country. Some immediately pointed the finger at climate change. “Hail more than a meter high, and then we wonder if climate change exists,” tweeted Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, governor of Jalisco, the state in southwestern Mexico where Guadalajara is. But scientists aren’t so sure of the link. “One good picture often leads people to go, ‘This is unprecedented,’” said John Allen, a meteorologist at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. “It looks impressive, but we’ve seen similar events in other parts of the world fairly recently. … I really don’t think we have a way to say conclusively that an event like this is attributable to climate change.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Among the controversies was an attack carried out against Quillette editor Andy Ngo, caught on film by Oregonian reporter Jim Ryan. The June 29 footage shows black bloc demonstrators punching and kicking Ngo while others throw milkshakes at him. The trend of throwing milkshakes at far-right politicians and activists originated earlier this year in the United Kingdom, but has more recently made its way over to the United States. Supporters of the practice see it as a way to humiliate political opponents and make them fear public organizing. Critics correctly note that this is a form of battery but have also warned that this tactic could quickly escalate into more damaging, permanent attacks involving acid or other corrosive chemicals. According to some on the far-right, their worst fears of such an escalation were realized during the attack on Ngo. In reality, there’s not any actual evidence of that -- and that’s a big problem." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

During an interview on Fox News, Carlson was asked about potential concerns among voters that Trump might be seen as "pandering" to Kim with his often flattering quotes about the North Korean leader and the "chemistry" that Trump says they share. Carlson said there "is no defending the North Korean regime," which he described as "monstrous and "the last really Stanilist regime in the world." "On the other hand, you've got to be honest about what it means to lead a country. It means killing people," Carlson continued. "Not on the scale the North Koreans do, but a lot of countries commit atrocities, including a number that we are closely allied with." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A Florida police officer has been caught planting evidence. John Iadarola and Brooke Thomas break it down on The Damage Report. Once at the car, sheriff’s deputy Zachary Wester claimed to smell marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle, which, he reported, turned up methamphetamine and marijuana. Despite insisting the drugs weren’t his, Benefield was arrested, charged $1,100 in fines and court fees, and sentenced to one year in county jail.* Benefield was seven months into his sentence when, in September 2018, the state attorney’s office dropped his case and those of 118 others. Largely thanks to the diligence of one assistant state attorney, Wester was suspected of routinely planting drugs during traffic stops over his two years in the department. Last month, Benefield and eight others filed a federal lawsuit accusing Wester and two other deputies of planting drugs and making illegal arrests, and the Jackson County sheriff’s office of negligence. The suit accuses all the defendants of violating the individuals’ civil and constitutional rights through illegal search, seizure, detention, prosecution, and incarceration. The plaintiffs’ attorney, Marie Mattox, told The Appeal the suit represents “only the tip of the iceberg,” and she plans to add another 18 to 20 plaintiffs. At least 37 people have filed lawsuits against Wester at the state level. The sheriff’s office declined to comment on the lawsuit." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Asked at a news conference as the G-20 summit wrapped up about Putin’s attack on the principles that guide the world’s democracies, Trump apparently interpreted the Russian leader’s comments as criticism of “liberals” and he started to rant about California — Los Angeles and San Francisco in particular. Trump also talked around two questions about the busing of children to help achieve racial integration in the U.S. He seemed to think the queries concerned what he referred to as the “primary method of getting people to schools.” He failed to address the issue of busing children to other districts that began in the 1970s to desegregate American classrooms and that sparked major local controversies. NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked if he believed busing was a “viable way of integrating schools.” “Well, it has been something that they’ve done for a long period of time,” Trump vaguely responded. “I mean, you know, there aren’t that many ways you’re going to get people to schools. So this is something that’s been done ... it is certainly a primary method of getting people to schools.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) that surged in the wake of her breakout performance in one of the recent debates among Democratic presidential candidates. A right-wing operative attacked Harris on Twitter after the debate, claiming she had no right to represent American blacks because her father grew up in Jamaica. Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican heritage, was born in Oakland, California, in 1964. The attack went viral thanks in part to Donald Jr.’s retweet and an assist from Twitter accounts identified as bots. The onslaught echoed the “birther” campaign against Barack Obama that falsely claiming he was born in Africa and couldn’t legally be president. Donald Trump (with wife Melania ) was a leading voice among a group of conspiracy theorists that promulgated the Obama birther lie. Earlier this month, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner refused to directly answer whether Trump’s birther lie about Obama was racist." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

That will probably change following Harris’ solid performance in Thursday night’s Democratic presidential debate. In just two hours, Harris not only managed to cast doubt on Biden’s front-runner status, but the California senator also dominated much of the debate and established herself as a formidable contender for the party’s nomination for the presidency. In doing so, she likely made herself a prime target for a presidential attack. “Trump has not gone after Harris so far because she has not been polling as well as Biden, Sanders and (Elizabeth) Warren,” said Lauren Wright, who teaches courses on the American presidency and women and politics at Princeton University." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The mercury reached 45.1 degrees Celsius (113.2 Fahrenheit) just before 3 p.m. local time in Villevieille, in the Gard department in southern France, according to the French national weather service Météo-France. This is 1 degree higher than the previous record from 2003. Around 4,000 French schools were closed on Friday and the opening hours of parks and public swimming pools were extended. French authorities have taken a number of radical steps this week to prevent a repeat of the tragic consequences of the 2003 heat wave that left around 14,000 people dead. Paris activated its heat emergency plan last weekend, put together in the aftermath of the 2003 heat wave. Cooling rooms were opened in some municipal buildings and mist showers were installed in the streets." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts was the top-polling Democratic presidential candidate onstage Wednesday night, and the early moments of the party's first 2020 debate showed why. Warren was asked four other questions before most of the nine other contenders had been asked two. Her platform set the pace for the night, with other candidates embracing elements of it -- or at least passing on opportunities to break directly with her. Meanwhile, two of the most aggressive candidates onstage, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, chose another target to mercilessly attack: former Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas. De Blasio hammered O'Rourke on health care, while Castro accused his fellow Texan of failing to do his homework on immigration. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey was a steady presence onstage Wednesday night, offering an aspirational message and separating himself from other candidates on gun control. Warren dominated the debate's first half hour, moving herself closer to Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont on single-payer health care -- a move that could ease the concerns of progressives in the process. She faded the rest of the way, but went unscathed. That Warren's policy focus dominated the first quarter of the debate, and largely went unchallenged, also signaled a clear leftward shift within the Democratic Party. But that dynamic was apparent throughout the night, especially when candidates were asked about health care, immigration, protecting abortions rights and gun control." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The court also ruled, in a separate high-profile case decided Thursday, that the Trump administration’s reasoning for adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census was insufficient, effectively blocking the question for now. On the final day of decisions before the court’s summer recess, Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the majority opinions of the court in both cases. The closely watched case on a charged political matter comes in the midst of the 2020 presidential election. The decision was met with scorn by some Democrats running for president, including former vice president Joe Biden, and a sharp dissent from the liberal justices. “We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts,” Roberts wrote in the redistricting case. He said those asking the top court to block gerrymandered districts effectively sought “an unprecedented expansion of judicial power.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The bitter controversy centers around whether the administration can ask all recipients a citizenship question on the 2020 census for the first time since 1950 -- a move that could impact the balance of power in states and the House of Representatives, which are based on total population. Adding the question, critics say, could result in minorities being undercounted. Writing for a 5-4 majority, Chief Justice John Roberts concluded that there was sufficient reason for concern about why the Commerce Department wanted to add the question. Roberts had the support of the four liberal justices. Supreme Court justices issued rulings on two major cases during their final day of the term, both dealing with partisan politics. Roberts split his votes, siding with conservatives on a major decision allowing severe partisan gerrymandering, and then crossing ideological lines to side with liberals on the census case." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Marshae Jones was reportedly five months pregnant when she was shot by another woman in December outside a shop in Pleasant Grove, near Birmingham. On Wednesday, Jones, 27, was indicted by a Jefferson county grand jury on a manslaughter charge and is expected to be held in Jefferson county jail on a $50,000 bond, while the woman accused of shooting her walked free, reported AL.com. The case has raised alarm among pro-choice groups who say it is shocking evidence of how the state’s restrictive abortion laws are now being used against pregnant women. “The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby,’’ said Lt Danny Reid of Pleasant Grove police following the shooting, reported AL.com in December. “It was the mother of the child who initiated and continued the fight which resulted in the death of her own unborn baby.” The Guardian has contacted Jefferson county district attorney’s office for comment." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Well, it’s not just you. In fact, there’s science to back it up—and it’s pretty concerning. Public Religion Research Institute just finished a new study that found a small but growing minority of Americans who believe businesses should be able to refuse service to others because of their religious beliefs. This was first brought up in the infamous lawsuit a few years back, in which the Christian owner of a bake shop refused service to a gay couple looking to buy one of his wedding cakes. But whatever merits that lawsuit did or did not have, the underlying attitude has started to spread. In 2014, only 16 percent of Americans believed that “it should be permissible to turn away customers based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or race.” In 2019, that number has nearly doubled to 30 percent." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks
