They have bipartisan committees working on background checks and various other things. And we'll see. I don't want people to forget that this is a mental health problem. I don't want them to forget that, because it is. It's a mental health problem. And as I say -- and I said the other night in New Hampshire; we had an incredible evening -- I said: It's the people that pull the trigger. It's not the gun that pulls the trigger." And then, when pressed on his recently expressed support for expanded background checks in the wake of twin mass murders in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, Trump said this on Sunday: "I'm also very, very concerned with the Second Amendment, more so than most Presidents would be. People don't realize we have very strong background checks right now."" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

And I'm not happy with it.” Trump’s comments to reporters in New Jersey were in response to a question about the network’s recent survey showing the president losing head-to-head matchups against four of the top Democratic presidential primary candidates. Trump said he didn’t “believe” the poll, adding: “Fox has changed. My worst polls have always been from Fox.” He also complained about how Democrats had barred the network from hosting or televising the party’s 2020 primary debates and signaled a warning about the the general election cycle. “And I think Fox is making a big mistake,” the president said when asked about the polling and the network’s leadership. “Because, you know, I'm the one that calls the shots on that — on the really big debates.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

"I think my rhetoric brings people together," he said last week, four days after a 21-year-old allegedly posted an anti-immigrant screed online and then allegedly opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring dozens of others. But a nationwide review conducted by ABC News has identified at least 36 criminal cases where Trump was invoked in direct connection with violent acts, threats of violence or allegations of assault. In nine cases, perpetrators hailed Trump in the midst or immediate aftermath of physically attacking innocent victims. In another 10 cases, perpetrators cheered or defended Trump while taunting or threatening others. And in another 10 cases, Trump and his rhetoric were cited in court to explain a defendant's violent or threatening behavior." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Heading into the June debates, former Vice President Joe Biden led Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) 32.0 percent to 16.9 percent and 12.8 percent, respectively, according to Real Clear Politics’ daily poll composite. Next were Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) (7.0 percent) and South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg (6.6 percent). Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas), Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Andrew Yang followed with 3.3 percent, 2.3 percent and 1.3 percent, respectively. More than five weeks later, and after about 10 hours of presumably high-stakes debating, all eight of June’s highest-polling candidates remain the highest-polling candidates today, and their numbers are strikingly similar: 32.2 percent for Biden, 16.5 percent for Sanders, 14.0 percent for Warren, 10.3 percent for Harris, 5.5 percent for Buttigieg, 3.0 percent for O’Rourke, and 1.7 percent for Booker, and 1.5 percent for Yang." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

"May God bless the memory of those who perished in Toledo, may God protect them. May God protect all of those from Texas to Ohio. May God bless the victims and their families," Trump said from the Diplomatic Room of the White House. The president's slip came at the end of a 10-Minute speech in which he decried the "barbaric slaughters" in Dayton and El Paso, Texas, which occurred within hours of each other over the weekend. Trump read his speech from a TelePrompTer, though it's unclear whether the prepared remarks included Toledo, or if the president simply misspoke. On Sunday, the El Paso police chief said it appeared increasingly likely that the shooter posted a white nationalist, anti-Hispanic screed online ahead of the attack. "In one voice," Trump said on Monday, "our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy." Trump's calls for action On the issue of the death penalty, Trump said he would direct the Department of Justice "to propose legislation ensuring that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty and that this capital punishment be delivered quickly, decisively and without years of needless delay." As I write this, reports say that at least 20 people were murdered in El Paso, and nine were killed in Dayton. This follows the mass shootings last weekend in Gilroy, CA, and Brooklyn, NY. NBC News reporter Ben Collins reported on the El Paso shooter’s alleged manifesto, writing, “The screed posted to the anonymous extremist message board [8chan] railed against immigrants in Texas and pushed talking points about preserving European identity in America.” 8chan is a far-right message board where shooters like this are portrayed as heroes; both the New Zealand shooter and the Poway Synagogue shooter both posted there. The Gilroy shooter recommended on Instagram a book that is popular among white supremacists on 8chan. Sharing his assessment on air, Collins was blunt: 8chan has a “body count.” The El Paso shooter’s alleged manifesto is built around the “great replacement” theory -- the white supremacist conspiracy theory that immigrants are being brought into the United States to replace white people. That should sound familiar: It's a regular part of Fox News prime time. It is specifically one of the things that Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson have been criticized for pushing." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

This time, gunmen in separate attacks in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, killed 31 people and injured dozens more. Already, the shootings have led to demands for action. At a vigil for the Dayton shooting, attendees shouted down Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine with a simple demand: “Do something!” In New York City, protesters in Times Square called for Congress to act on the issue. But if this plays out like the aftermath of past mass shootings, from Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to Las Vegas in 2017, the chances of Congress taking major action on guns is very low. This has become an American routine: After every mass shooting, the debate over guns and gun violence starts up once again. Maybe some bills get introduced. Critics respond with concerns that the government is trying to take away their guns. The debate stalls. So even as America continues experiencing levels of gun violence unrivaled in the rest of the developed world, nothing happens — no laws are passed by Congress, nothing significant is done to try to prevent the next horror." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The toll in Saturday's massacre rose to 22 people killed and more than two dozen injured on Monday morning, and it was one of three major mass shootings across the US in the past week. But even among that horrific trio, the shooting in El Paso stood out as a domestic terrorist attack designed to inspire fear among Hispanic immigrants to the US. The killings took place at a spot along the US-Mexico border frequented by Mexicans and by a man who police believe posted a political document explaining his hatred of immigrants and race-mixing. President Trump on Monday morning said the shooter's manifesto was "consumed with racist hate." "In one voice, our nation must condemn racism, bigotry and white supremacy," he said. "These sinister ideologies must be defeated. Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul." But he did not acknowledge his own divisive and racist rhetoric or address the suspect's access to firearms, and instead focused on unrelated issues of mental health and violent video games." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The judge found Pantaleo guilty of using a banned chokehold but did not find him guilty of intentionally restricting Garner's breathing. Garner's repeated cry of "I can't breathe" triggered national outrage and galvanized activists concerned about police use of force. As a result of the decision, the NYPD announced that Pantaleo has been suspended, "as is the longstanding practice in these matters when the recommendation is termination." It is unknown whether he will be paid during this suspension. The judge, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Trials Rosemarie Maldonado, issued her recommendation Friday. Pantaleo's attorney and the Civilian Complaint Review Board now have two weeks to comment on Maldonado's decision. NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill will have the final word on whether to accept the judge's recommendation or decide on a different outcome." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In 2014, Garner died after being confronted by police in Staten Island for allegedly selling untaxed loose cigarettes. One of the officers, Daniel Pantaleo, put him in a department-prohibited chokehold — in footage of the incident, Garner can be heard saying “I can’t breathe” multiple times. The Department of Justice has decided not to file charges against Pantaleo, who remains on paid desk duty at the NYPD and underwent a NYPD departmental trial earlier this year that could result in his termination. In the meantime, de Blasio has declined to fire Pantaleo, saying that it’s up to the police commissioner to do so. It was evident from the start of the debate Wednesday that the topic would become unexpectedly noteworthy. Hecklers interrupted de Blasio’s opening statement, the first one of the night, with shouts of, “Fire Pantaleo!” They interrupted Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) opening statement as well, though it’s not clear why. Both Booker and de Blasio responded on Twitter — or, since they were on the debate stage, their campaigns did." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Sen. Kamala Harris, who shot up in the polls after the first debate, also faced withering attacks from her rivals. Here are the top moments from Wednesday’s debate. ‘Go easy on me, kid’ Harris didn’t go easy on Biden during the first debates in Miami last month. The two sparred over Biden’s record on race, after the California senator recounted being bused to integrate a Berkeley, California, school in the 1970s — and critiqued the former vice president for opposing busing as a method of desegregation in the period. On Wednesday, Biden hoped for a different outcome. As candidates made their way to the stage before the debate got started, Biden, 76, asked the 54-year-old Harris to “go easy on me, kid.” In his opening statement minutes later, Biden predicted that Harris might not follow his advice. “I think Democrats are expecting some engagement here, and I expect we will get it,” he said." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Rossello, who has faced intense pressure from protesters and politicians to step down after the leak of offensive text messages between the governor and his top aides, made the announcement in a livestreamed message late Wednesday. His resignation is effective Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. He and his staff are accused of making homophobic, misogynistic and sexist comments against opponents and critics and mocking victims of Hurricane Maria. In a lengthy message, Rossello cited the accomplishments of his administration when it comes to infrastructure, corruption reforms and LGBT rights. He also noted the challenges the island faced after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. "I hope that this decision will serve as a call for citizen reconciliation that we need so much to move forward with the welfare of Puerto Rico as its north," Rossello said in the remarks announcing his resignation. "I complete my mandate and the most I desire is peace and progress." Secretary of Justice Wanda Vazquez will become the next governor of Puerto Rico." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The multimillionaire financier, who is accused of sex trafficking underage girls, was found semi-conscious at the Metropolitan Correctional Center with marks on his neck, local station NBC New York first reported, citing sources close to the investigation. It’s not yet clear whether the injuries, which were incurred Tuesday, were self-inflicted or the result of an assault. The injuries were not described as serious and prison officials were treating it as a possible suicide attempt, a law enforcement official who had been briefed on the matter told The New York Times. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in an email to HuffPost on Thursday said Epstein remains housed at the jail facility, denying reports that he had been taken to a local hospital for treatment. “As with all inmates, for privacy and security reasons, we do not share information on an inmate’s medical status or their conditions of confinement,” the spokesperson added." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The officers asked them for their papers. Galicia's brother, Marlon, who was born in Mexico and didn't have legal status, was detained for two days before signing his own deportation, as first reported by the Dallas Morning News. Galicia, an 18-year-old from Dallas, remained in immigration custody for almost a month despite being a United States citizen. That night, Galicia didn't have his American passport with him, so he showed the Customs and Border Protection officers a Texas ID and a social security card. But the officers were suspicious that the documents were fraudulent. After fingerprinting Galicia, they had found a tourist visa under his name stating Mexico as his birthplace. According to Galicia's attorney, his undocumented mother had gotten the visa with the false information, thinking that her son wouldn't be able to cross the border to see his family otherwise. As a result of the ordeal, Galicia remained in CBP custody for three weeks, after which he was transferred to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center. He was released on Tuesday." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

It wasn’t the parade of fireworks and explosive new information some had hoped it would be. Instead, it was Mueller providing a lot of repetitive, one-word answers; Democrats trying to methodically lay out a case for impeachment; and Republicans trying to deliver viral moments with a lot of yelling. Mueller appeared before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday morning to discuss his two-year investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump. He already delivered his findings in the 400-plus-page report made public in April, and he delivered a statement on the report in May. And though he made clear in that statement that he would not go beyond the bounds of what was already in the report if called in to testify before Congress, House Democrats still brought him in for questioning." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is a Somali refugee who became a US citizen. In November, she was elected to Congress by an overwhelming majority of voters in her Minneapolis district. Her story embodies elements of the American dream. But Omar is also an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump. And last Sunday, Trump lashed out at her and other Democratic congresswomen of color in a string of tweets in which he told them to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came.” The subtext, in Omar’s case, was clear — the president was suggesting she go back to Somalia. During Trump’s rally on Wednesday evening in Greenville, North Carolina — following two days in which Trump repeated the racist attacks he made against Omar and other Democratic congresswomen of color — Trump fans expressed their full-throated agreement with the president. After Trump spent some time smearing Omar, going as far as to baselessly suggest she supports al-Qaeda, chants of “send her back” broke out. Trump basked in them. The moment arguably represented a new low in Trump’s long history of racial demagoguery.” #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks
