It all started on Wednesday evening, when Time magazine published a photograph of Trudeau wearing offensive makeup at an Arabian Nights-themed party at West Point Grey Academy, the private day school where Trudeau was a teacher in 2001. The photo appeared in the school’s 2000-’01 yearbook. Trudeau was 29 years old at the time the photo was taken. In the image, Trudeau is dressed in a white turban decorated with a large feather in the front and what looks like a flowing white robe — what he later described as an “Aladdin costume.” His face, neck, and hands are all covered in dark brown makeup. He stands with a group of four women, his arm around one — none of whom are wearing brownface." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In America today, over 18 million families are paying more than 50 percent of their income on housing, while last year alone the five largest banks on Wall Street made a record-breaking $111 billion in profits. How are families in America supposed to pay for food, transportation, health care, prescription drugs, education, and childcare when over half of their income is going to pay the rent or the mortgage? The sad and painful reality is that many of them cannot, and millions of Americans are going deeply into debt just to make ends meet. In America today, there is virtually no city or town where a full-time minimum wage worker can afford a decent, two-bedroom apartment. Meanwhile, the top 25 hedge fund managers in America made an average of $850 million apiece last year. In America today, over half a million people will be sleeping out on the streets or in homeless shelters because they don’t have the money to put a roof over their heads. Meanwhile, large, profitable corporations like Amazon, which is owned by the wealthiest person in the world, pay nothing in federal income taxes. In America today, corrupt real estate developers are gentrifying neighborhoods and forcing working families out of the homes and apartments where they have lived their entire lives and replacing them with fancy condominiums and hotels that only the very rich can afford. Sadly, we have a president right now who is not only ignoring the affordable housing crisis. He and his administration are actively making it worse. Instead of expanding federal housing programs, Trump wants to cut them by $9.6 billion, or 18 percent." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The secretary of state doesn't it have and Saudi Arabia certainly doesn't have it," Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, told CNN's Erin Burnett on "OutFront." Buck was charged with one count each of battery causing serious injury, administering methamphetamine and maintaining a drug house, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Buck is accused of injecting a 37-year-old man, who overdosed but survived, with methamphetamine on Sept. 11. That latest incident comes after two men were found dead in his Laurel Avenue apartment in West Hollywood. In both cases, African American men — Gemmel Moore, 26, and Timothy Dean, 55 — had overdosed on methamphetamine inside. "I sat through those hearings," Sen. Kamala Harris, a member of the Senate Judiciary Commitee and a Democratic presidential candidate, tweeted on Sunday. "Brett Kavanaugh lied to the U.S. Senate and most importantly to the American people. He was put on the Court through a sham process and his place on the Court is an insult to the pursuit of truth and justice. He must be impeached." His “best,” however, was profoundly bizarre. In one especially odd moment, Trump remarked upon how white one of his key Latino surrogates looks. “He happens to be Hispanic, but I’ve never quite figured it out because he looks more like a WASP than I do. So I haven’t figured that one out. But I’ll tell you what — there is nobody that loves this country more or Hispanic more than Steve Cortes,” Trump said. (Cortes is a pro-Trump television commentator and member of Trump’s Hispanic Advisory Council.) “Nobody loves the Hispanics more!” Trump continued, before asking Cortes a question that suggested Latinos have dual loyalties: “Who do you like more, the country or the Hispanics? He says the country. I don’t know, I may have to go for the Hispanics to be honest with you. We got a lot of Hispanics! We love our Hispanics.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In her new book, “On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal,” Klein looks unsparingly at the rise of ecofascism, as Western countries fortify their borders and white supremacy surges around the world in response to the climate crisis. But she also lays out another path forward in which mankind meets the challenge of global warming with radical and systemic transformation. “We do know that if we are going to lower our emissions in time, it is going to take transformations of how we live in cities, how we move ourselves around, how we grow our food, where we get our energy from,” Klein says. “Essentially, what the Green New Deal is saying: If we’re going to do all that, why wouldn’t we tackle all of these systemic economic and social crises at the same time? Because we live in a time of multiple, overlapping crises.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for the attack, but numerous reports indicate the attack may have come from Iraq or Iran rather than Yemen. Crude oil prices soared more than 15% after the Aramco-run plants suffered heavy damage. One of the plants struck is the world’s biggest petroleum-processing facility. According to one estimate, the attacks decreased Saudi’s daily oil output by nearly 6 million barrels. While the United States has been quick to blame Iran, other world powers have not yet assigned blame. Beyond offering new information on Ramirez’s account, the report is resurfacing a public debate: Did Kavanaugh repeatedly lie to Congress? The Saturday report retraced Kavanaugh’s confirmation process, detailing a fast-tracked FBI investigation failed to interrogate more than two dozen potential witnesses in Ramirez’s case, one that ultimately gave Republican senators enough cover to confirm Kavanaugh. It also publicly recounts allegations by Max Stier, CEO of the nonpartisan Washington, DC, nonprofit Center for Presidential Transition, who says he saw Kavanaugh push his penis into the hand of a female student at Yale during a separate incident that didn’t involve Ramirez. Stier talked to the FBI about his allegation, but they did not investigate the matter. The New York Times updated its story to point out that the alleged victim did not wish to comment, and that friends say she did not remember the incident." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Elizabeth Warren, seeking to sustain her momentum in the Democratic presidential race, is proposing an across-the-board increase in Social Security benefits, financed by new taxes on high-income Americans. Rolling out the plan Thursday morning, hours before the third presidential debate, Warren called for an immediate benefit increase of $200 per month for current and future beneficiaries. At the same time, the Massachusetts Democrat proposed new rules that would provide additional benefit increases for low-income, female, disabled, minority, and former government worker beneficiaries, reasoning that they’ve been shortchanged by the existing structure of the program. To pay for it, Warren would impose new taxes on what she calls the richest 2% of Americans. She would eliminate the income cap on Social Security taxes for those earning more than $250,000 a year, imposing a 14.8% levy on incomes above that amount, split evenly between employers and employees." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The widely reviled commercial, which aired on ABC and was paid for by donors to the GOP New Faces PAC, opened with a photograph of the young Latinx congresswoman’s face being set on fire to reveal images of the 1970s genocide in Cambodia underneath. The attack ad was narrated by the Cambodian-American daughter of a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide, who offered the preposterous claim that Ocasio-Cortez’s democratic socialist ideals are the same as those of the radical Maoist militants who killed up to one-fourth of Cambodia’s population in the late 1970s. “Does Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez know the horror of socialism?” the narrator, Elizabeth Heng, says. “My father was minutes from death in Cambodia, before a forced marriage saved his life. Instead, he chose to speak on just about anything else that crossed his mind for an hour and 10 minutes. Trump took the stage clapping along with his excited GOP audience, and he really never stopped praising himself. He cheered his administration’s repeal on Thursday of clean water regulations, while also congratulating himself for what he claimed is the nation’s cleanest water and air in the last 25 years. He cheered the Senate’s confirmation Thursday of his 150th nominee to federal courts. And he lauded the economy that has produced low unemployment rates for minorities." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

They’re built out of family, reinforced by courage, and sustained by faith. Through a commitment to the power of community, movements can alter the course of history. I grew up with the understanding that the gas and electricity might shut off and paying for prescriptions or covering the bills might not be possible. At 13, I moved in with my grandparents on 79th Street in Auburn Gresham. I watched my grandmother work tirelessly to reinvigorate our block and open a local food bank in St. Philip Church in Englewood. As we bagged and distributed food to our neighbors, I realized that she was the first true organizer I ever met. Every break from school, I was at her food bank in St. Philip Church, helping to bag and distribute food to our neighbors. She taught me not only the value of community activism, but blessed me with the resolve to treat every individual with dignity and compassion. Through a sustained model of inspiration, she provided the support and love I would need to rise from a 1.2 GPA to the honor roll for the rest of high school. After graduating from Perspectives High School, I enrolled at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. When my college sweetheart, Brittani, and I moved back to Chicago, we both landed dream jobs in the non-profit, impact space. I began my career as a Manager of Program Innovation for OneGoal, focusing my efforts on projects which aimed to increase college-persistence in low-income communities, and as a Community Leader with the Obama Foundation, assisting young organizers around the country and developing initiatives designed to heal their communities from within. My involvement in community initiatives has shown me just how powerful advocacy can be when backed by a coalition of determined individuals, fighting tirelessly for justice. Although I held an amazing and fulfilling job, I still couldn’t afford the deductible for a therapist session or a city-sticker to avoid a fine. This is the very cycle that defines the lives of so many in the First District of Illinois. Throughout all my experiences, my highs and my lows, I have come to understand that through a commitment to community and a dedication to organization, we can become the very solution we need to reverse this cycle." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

The Food and Drug Administration is currently finalizing its guidance to remove all non-tobacco flavors of e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol, from the market within 30 days. Companies might be able to reintroduce their flavors at a later date, so long as they submit a formal application and receive approval from the FDA. Vaping companies such as Juul have been criticized for hooking children on e-cigarettes with flavors such as mango and creme. The surge in underage vaping, which U.S. health officials have labeled as an “epidemic,” is one of the reasons why they plan to ban them — at least until the FDA can thoroughly review their safety, Azar said after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on the issue." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

PREVIOUSLY: A high school swimmer in Alaska won her 100-meter freestyle heat on Friday, only to be disqualified as soon as she got out of the water. Her one-piece swimsuit broke the modesty rule, the referee announced. The young girl, a 17-year-old state championship swimmer at Dimond High School in Anchorage, was wearing the school-issued swimsuit that every other girl on the team was wearing and yet she was the only one disqualified. A referee who was present at the swim meet told the Anchorage Daily News that the official who made the controversial call disqualified the girl because she could see “butt cheek touching butt cheek.” The referee who made the controversial call has not been publicly named and HuffPost will not identify the high school swimmer who was disqualified, as she is a minor. The disqualification quickly stirred controversy in the Anchorage community, with some pointing to the fact that the swimmer is nonwhite and “curvier” than most others on the team. Lauren Langford, a swim coach at a neighboring high school, was the first to make this point in a Saturday essay on Medium. “All of these girls are all wearing suits that are cut the same way,” Langford told The Washington Post on Tuesday. “And the only girl who gets disqualified is a mixed-race girl with rounder, curvier features.”" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

A crowd of victims’ relatives is expected at ground zero Wednesday, while President Donald Trump is scheduled to join an observance at the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence is to speak at the third attack site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Former President George W. Bush, the commander-in-chief at the time of the 2001 attacks, is due at an afternoon wreath-laying at the Pentagon. Eighteen years after the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil, the nation is still grappling with the aftermath at ground zero, in Congress and beyond. The attacks’ aftermath is visible from airport security checkpoints to Afghanistan. A rocket exploded at the U.S. embassy as the anniversary began in Afghanistan, where a post-9/11 invasion has become America’s longest war." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) wants Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump so that the Republican lawmakers who support him will be on the record opposing impeachment and suffer a “stain on their careers.” “I want to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment of this president, knowing his corruption, having it on the records so that they can have that stain on their careers for the rest of their lives,” she told reporters Tuesday. “Because this is outrageous, to protect the amount of lawlessness and corruption coming out of this presidency.” On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee unveiled a proposal “to spell out the panel’s authorities as it intensifies its consideration of articles of impeachment,” Politico reports. The committee will vote on the proposal Thursday." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

His victory comes in the wake of a massive scandal that plagued the district’s election last fall, and suggests that Republicans still have a lot to worry about in 2020. North Carolina’s Ninth is, after all, a staunchly conservative district that’s been electing Republicans since the 1960s, and one President Donald Trump won by 12 points in 2016. Bishop’s win should have been relatively easy, but was overshadowed by the previous Republican candidate fielding allegations of ballot fraud and suburban voter pushback toward Trump. The fact that Bishop held onto the seat for Republicans will surely be a relief for the party. Still, Republicans looking ahead to 2020 might worry about similar districts; the tight margin doesn’t bode well for competitive seats in suburban districts across the country. If anything, Bishop’s race suggests GOP candidates in these places should be concerned about maintaining any existing advantages they currently have." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Davis, 75, first elected to Congress in 2000, announced her retirement from the solidly Democratic 53rd District seat in a news release Wednesday. Candidates to replace her will face off in the primary election March 3. “I have struggled to make this very difficult decision,” Davis said in the announcement. “I will not seek another term in Congress. My decision today represents a desire to live and work ‘at home’ in San Diego.“ In a personal letter to constituents, Davis said she did not know what she would do next, but there are many ways she could continue to serve her community." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Trump in recent months has repeatedly railed against his once-beloved news network, and The Atlantic reports on Monday that "on occasions when he's unhappy with the network's coverage, Trump will pick up the phone and call [Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott] to complain." These calls, the report says, "don't tend to go well." That's because Fox News executives reportedly couldn't care less about Trump's attacks on the network, with the thinking being that he needs them far more than they need him, and they have the "leverage" in this relationship. "I'm not sure she tells him what he wants to hear," one source told The Atlantic of Trump's calls with Scott. Trump has targeted Fox News for various reasons in recent months, including the network's polls showing him losing to 2020 Democrats and its hiring of former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile as a contributor. In his latest escalation, the president last month complained after a Fox News interview with the DNC's communications director that the network "isn't working for us anymore," telling his supporters "we have to start looking for a new news outlet."" #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

But not Joe Biden falling. The former vice president now clings to a narrow lead over Warren in our CBS News/YouGov Tracker estimate of convention delegates — the only count that ultimately matters — with an estimated 600 delegates of all delegates available through Super Tuesday, to Warren's 545. Warren has gained delegate share as supporters of other, lower-tier candidates have been switching their preferences toward her. Bernie Sanders rounds out the top tier of candidates with 286 delegates in a race that has tightened substantially over the summer. Biden's position is helped by amassing enough delegates from South Carolina and other Southern states, as well as consistently strong showings elsewhere to keep him up in the overall delegate standings — albeit not by much." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Since lawmakers were last in session Aug. 2, three mass shootings have killed 38 people and injured many more. The White House is expected to release gun policy proposals that Trump supports, possibly this week. But few gun safety advocates or Democrats are optimistic that the proposals will be as expansive as they want. Returning lawmakers will also face a quick deadline to fund the government again, or risk another shutdown. And the White House needs to pick up the pace on negotiations with Congress over a revised NAFTA trade agreement if Trump’s top legislative priority, now called the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, is to become law this year. All the while, some House Democrats will be clamoring to get impeachment proceedings against Trump underway." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Dary is no stranger to the burden of student loans, the perils of an unstable healthcare system, or a tax system that hurts local businesses while turning a blind eye to the corporations erasing the middle class. The video concept appears to be a public relations exercise. It “is not about facts and figures,” instead opting to focus on the “emotive sense of the community” and “speaks to the nature of their caring relationship,” according to a video concept paper dated July of this year and obtained by TYT. The proposed narrative contrasts sharply with what rights groups have said about the facility. In July, the human rights group Amnesty International published a report calling for Homestead to be shut down due to the unlawful conditions witnessed by the group during visits in April and July of this year. The concept paper, pitched by the lobbying and public relations group Qorvis, is essentially a script that appears to suggest using a short film to cast Homestead’s conditions in a more positive light. Qorvis has strong ties to Saudi Arabia, which has relied on lobbying firms and registered agents to preserve its unusually warm relationship with the Trump administration. For example, last year Qorvis lobbied against the Justice Against State Sponsors of Terrorism Act, which would have let families of 9/11 victims proceed with litigation against Saudi Arabia. In one elaborate scheme, Qorvis is alleged to have gone as far as tricking veterans into lobbying on behalf of Saudi Arabia against the proposed legislation." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

What wasn’t routine was where the crew stopped along the way: President Donald Trump’s Turnberry resort, about 50 miles outside Glasgow, Scotland. Since April, the House Oversight Committee has been investigating why the crew on the C-17 military transport plane made the unusual stay — both en route to the Middle East and on the way back — at the luxury waterside resort, according to several people familiar with the incident. But they have yet to receive any answers from the Pentagon. The inquiry is part of a broader, previously unreported probe into U.S. military expenditures at and around the Trump property in Scotland. According to a letter the panel sent to the Pentagon in June, the military has spent $11 million on fuel at the Prestwick Airport — the closest airport to Trump Turnberry — since October 2017, fuel that would be cheaper if purchased at a U.S. military base. The letter also cites a Guardian report that the airport provided cut-rate rooms and free rounds of golf at Turnberry for U.S. military members." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

Over the past three years, Erica worked as an education analyst for New York City’s Independent Budget Office, evaluating federal and state policies that affect the lives of students and their families. The same skills that Erica used to study the inequities across the nation’s largest school system bridged her ability to also advocate for stronger workplace protections for all New Yorkers. Prior to joining the Independent Budget Office, Erica worked as an education analyst and counsel in the New York State Senate. In this role, Erica partnered with advocates and experts from across the city and state to develop comprehensive education policies. She drafted legislation and policy papers on behalf of the senators, and represented their interests at the budget negotiation tables. Although Erica initially saw herself remaining in government services for her career, she resigned in 2015 after believing sexual harassment was an unspoken but mandatory part of her job description. It would take almost three years before she recognized the power in telling her story; the reigniting of Tarana Burke’s “Me, Too” movement propelled Erica to speak out about her experience and the systemic culture of harassment that allowed it to happen. She believed that if speaking out could help bring change to an unjust system that shunned victims, it was worth the risk." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

We’re looking at you, CNN, who played right along with Trump in the distraction game. To back up a bit: This all began on Sunday when the president tweeted a warning about Hurricane Dorian and said that in addition to Florida, “South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated by the storm.” Apparently, he was wrong about Alabama, and the Birmingham National Weather Service quickly corrected him. It all could have ended there, but of course it didn’t. On Wednesday, weather reporters and other experts noticed that it looked like someone had drawn an extra little bubble onto a map of the path of a storm in a video of Trump talking about it. People started to wonder whether Trump or someone else had used a Sharpie pen — which the president is known to use — to doctor the map so it looked like he had been right. #SharpieGate was born." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks

In those days, most of the jokes he pitched were deemed too dark for the sunny host. “They didn’t really want my sensibility,” Jeselnik says on this week’s episode of The Last Laugh podcast. He ended up staying for a year and leaving of his own volition. He was long gone by the time Fallon ruffled Donald Trump’s hair on The Tonight Show and subsequently got blamed for “normalizing” the candidate just a few weeks before the 2016 election. “I felt a little bad for Jimmy in that situation,” Jeselnik admits. But he doesn’t blame Fallon. “Trump and Lorne Michaels are friends. And Lorne Michaels produced that show,” Jeselnik says of The Tonight Show. “And I’m sure—and I don’t want to put words in his mouth, and I haven’t talked to Jimmy in years—but I’m sure it’s one of his biggest regrets.” In an interview last year, Fallon said that he never intended to “normalize” Trump and felt “depressed” amidst all of the backlash. “I made a mistake,” he added. “I'm sorry if I made anyone mad. And, looking back, I would do it differently.” Fallon likely did not think Trump would go on to win the election when he had him on his show. And Jeselnik felt the same way in the fall of 2016. He was even pitching a show at the time based on the premise that with Hillary Clinton as president he could portray a villainous Trump-esque pundit in opposition to her, similar to the role Stephen Colbert ended up playing on The Colbert Report under President Obama." #TheDamageReport #JohnIadarola #TheYoungTurks
