Political News, Media
The reporter will be responsible for staying on top of California political developments, especially, but not exclusively, state government and state-level politics. This includes both governance and electoral politics. The reporter will be expected to file two-three articles a week on average about news-of-day events or topical issues, as well as do enterprise reporting to break exclusive stories on a frequent basis (e.g., at least every couple of weeks). Coverage of congressional and other elections in 2022 will be a significant part of this beat.
This position will involve pitching stories and doing stories as assigned. You will report to the managing editor. The job will entail building a network of contacts relevant to California politics. It will also involve mastering online state and federal reporting tools, monitoring and researching public disclosure forms, and filing public-records requests. Unlike some political reporting positions, this job will require building networks outside the state’s political structures; our California political coverage will address and incorporate issues relevant to disenfranchised people and communities, especially the poor and others systematically excluded from access to power. The reporter will also be expected to cover and unearth stories related to the role of money in politics, tracking donations, political action committees, lobbying, conflicts of interest, and more. As circumstances dictate, you may also be asked to take still photographs, shoot video, or shoot and produce on-camera video segments about your reporting.
The job may require working weekends and/or odd hours, especially in the case of breaking news, late-night news conferences, and similar events.
Professional reporting experience preferred; we will consider applicants who demonstrate relevant experience in another field. Must write at a professional level and know how to adhere to AP style. Must understand and be able to observe journalistic standards. Must live within driving distance of Sacramento, be willing to relocate, or explain why you can carry out the responsibilities of the job remotely. Please be prepared to submit samples of past work and the names of references (preferably professional journalists).
